SUMMARY OF AN ARTICLE

TITLE: ARAB ESL SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’

ATTITUDE TOWARD ENGLISH SPELLING AND

WRITING

AUTHOR Bandar Al-Sobhi , Sabariah Md Rashid , and Ain Nadzimah

: Abdullah (Universiti Putra Malaysia, Selangor, Malaysia)

SOURCE: Al-Sobhi, B., Md Rashid, S., & Abdullah, A. N. (2018). Arab ESL

secondary school students’ attitude toward English spelling and

writing. Sage Open, 8(1), 2158244018763477.

SUMMARY

This article of Bandar Al-Sobhi, Sabariah Md Rashid and Ain Nadzimah Abdullah

used a quantitative method to analyze Arab secondary school students' attitude toward

learning to spell and write, as well as to determine the relationship between their

attitude toward English language spelling and writing in the ESL context by using a

52-item attitude questionnaire addressed to 70 students.

According to the authors’ findings, students had a favorable attitude toward English

spelling and writing skills despite a considerable difference between Arabic and

English in phonemic orthography, indicating that they were aware that these skills

assume considerable importance. Therefore, the students recognized that English

spelling rules were worthwhile to master due to their crucial role in writing, and

writing was of great importance as a means of communication between students and

their family members and friends. The study also noted a significant positive

correlation between the students’ attitude toward spelling and writing that plays a

crucial role in designing tasks to enhance their performance.

As this study looks at students’ positive attitude to the role of writing and spelling

which are regarded as very complex aspects in English language learning regardless

of their first language differs significantly from English in phonemic orthography, it is

applicable in my study when I am doing a research on students’ attitude toward

academic writing in Vietnamese context since Vietnamese is also a very phonetic

language. Consequently, this research could be replicated in the Vietnamese situation,

and I can relate my results to the results of this study. In addition, I also found that the

research method the authors used to study is dependable, and they used a moderate

sample size of 70 students which are representative.
