1. What is the purpose of the article? Is it stated clearly in the abstract?
The purpose of this study are to find out the score of students’ vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability and also the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and writing descriptive text ability among the seventh grade students in SMP N 3 Bantul Yogyakarta academic year 2016/2017. Yes, it is stated clearly in the abstract. 2. What is discussed in the introduction (each paragraph)? First paragraph tells about the important of language to communicate with other people. There are 4 kinds of skill in mastering English language, which is speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Students in the first grade should mastery writing skill. And, the second paragraph tells about many factors that influencing student’s English writing ability, like every student have different background knowledge, background of the English teacher, lack of motivation to study English, the English material, and other supported facilities. Third paragraph tells about the students in Junior High School 3 Bantul have limited vocabulary, such as when the teacher ask to communicate using English, the students fell that they difficult to speak in English and to write some texts. Based on the problem above, the researcher intended to reveal whether there is a correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their writing competence. 3. How many previous studies mentioned in the introduction? There is no previous studies that mentioned in the introduction. 4. Do you find gab/problem of the study in the introduction? What is it? No, I do not find the gab or problem in the introduction. 5. What is discussed in the literature review? In literature review including in: a) Teaching and learning English as a second language and foreign language. Judd in Kennedy (1989:39) said that when English is studied as a foreign language, it means that English is studied as many foreign language and communicative functions for students once they finish the actual course. b) Vocabulary. Renandya (2002:255) claim that vocabulary is a component of language and provides much of the basis for how well learners speak, listen, read and write. According to Nation (2001:75) there are two kinds of vocabulary, they are receptive and productive or passive and active vocabulary. Cameron (2001:72) believes that building vocabulary is central to learning of foreign language. c) The concept of writing ability According to Grenville (2001), writing has some purposes, as entertain, to persuade, and to inform. Oshima and Hague (1994) said that the basic of structure of descriptive writing consists of some parts. 6. What is the research design used? Is it stated clearly in the method? The research design is non-experimental by using correlational method. Yes, it is stated clearly in the method. 7. How does the writer collect the data and what instruments are used? The data collection technique used two tests, multiple choices test to find out the students score of vocabulary mastery and essay test to find out the score of students ability in writing descriptive text. And the instrument used in this study is questionnaires. 8. How does the writer analyze the data? The writers used correlation analysis using SPSS 16.0 program. And use rating scale of writing and vocabulary. 9. What is the finding? The result shown that maximum score of vocabulary test is 95, the minimum score of vocabulary test is 12.5, the mean score of students vocabulary mastery is 67.12. For the writing essay, it is shown that the maximum score is 95, the minimum score is 45, and the mean score is 63.79. The value of rxy = 0.344 with p value = 0.013. It means that there is a positive significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing ability. Based on the research findings above we can conclude that research findings support the theories that vocabulary relates the writing ability in descriptive text. 10. What is the conclusion? The writers conclude that the score of vocabulary mastery among the seventh grade students of SMP N 3 Bantul Yogjakarta is high, and the writing ability it’s also high. From the result of correlation coefficient, there is correlation between vocabulary mastery and writing ability. The positive correlation means that if students can master vocabulary mastery in descriptive ability.
