COURSE/YEAR/SECTION: 1 - BSA 1

A WORLD OF REGIONS

A. DIFFICULT CONCEPTS (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

1. The Global City
2. Global North and Global South
3. Cold War

B. INSIGHTS (What new insights or learning did you gain from the topic?)

1. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I thought that

Third World countries are those who have low economic stability and have a conflict
on its wealth.
However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I now think/ realize that
There are more than 100 countries that fit the label of “Third World”, but they have
vastly different levels of economic stability. Some are relatively poor, but many are
not.

2. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I thought that

The economic status depends on the wealth of the country in terms of the production
and consumption of goods and services and the race of the citizens do not contribute
nor affect the economy.
However, reading these material/ understanding the lesson, I now think/ realize that
There is racial inequality, specifically between the Black and the White at the global
level. Whites are disproportionately in the dominant North, while blacks are primarily
in the south, although this is changing with South-to North migration. In other words,
migration and globalization. Nevertheless, the economic differences between the
wealthy Global North and poor Global South “have always possessed a racial
character”.

3. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I never thought that
Cities have less conflict in terms of the wealth, production, and its political viewpoint.

However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I now think/ realize that
Although cities are major beneficiaries of globalization, Bauman (2003) claimed that

they are also the most severely affected by global problems. Therefore, the city faces
peculiar political problems, wherein it is often fruitlessly seeking to deal locally with
global problems and “local politics has become hopelessly overloaded”.

C. QUESTIONS (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want
explanation more?)

1. In the near future, will there be a time that the Philippines will not be labeled as Third
World Country?
2. What are the possible ways on how Third World countries keep striving to survive,
especially at modern times?
3. How does economic stability affect globalization? Cite some examples.
