A World Of Regions

A. DIFFICULT CONCEPTS (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

1. Global North and Global South
2. Rural-urban differentiation

B. INSIGHTS (What new insights or learning did you gain from the topic?)

1. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I have yet to know the
meaning of “First, Second and Third World Hierarchy”.

However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, it seems the First World
refers to the western capitalist countries, the Second World refers to the Soviet
Union and its allies while the Third World refers to the rest.

2. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I have yet to know the brief
history of the First, Second and Third World terms.

However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, it seems that these terms
where coined during the Cold War. Eventually, the Second world term did not put
much into thought by the public. Instead, the First world referring to rich and
industrialized countries and Third world referring to non-alliance countries remained
in the minds of almost everyone.

3. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I have yet to know the
relation of the Third world countries to economy.

However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, it seems that the term
Third World is an outdated term and more than 100 countries may have been
included, their economic status widely differ from each other. To categorize
countries with a more improve basis, social scientists used GDP or Gross Domestic

Productive to determine one country’s economic productivity and/or income
capability.

4. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I have yet to know the GDP
from GNI or Gross National Income.

However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, it seems that GDP
measures the country’s output while the Gross National Income measures GDP per
Capital.

5. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I have yet to know Global
North and South countries.

However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, it seems that Global
North includes First World Countries such as US, Canada, and Western Europe and
some developed countries in Asia. The Global South include countries such as
Caribbean, Latin America, South America, Africa and parts of Asia.

6. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I have yet to understand the
relationship between Global North from Global South.

However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, it seems that Global
North mostly have white rich people while Global South have black people mostly
poor. The two have severe racial problems in the past. It is globalization of
transportation that made white and black people migrate from North to South and
vice versa.

7. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I have yet to know the
economic history of Global North and South.

However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, it seems that the Global
South produces non-traditional products and is dependent on the North’s
industrialized foods while the Global North manufactures products from the
purchased raw materials from the South. These were the agribusiness occurring
from the past.

8. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I have yet to understand the
condition of World Cities.

However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, it seems that world cities
may have been the organization as the center the global network, there still exist,

internally, economic and political problems like inequality. They have the most
global problems existing across the globe.
