A. DIFFICULT CONCEPTS (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)
1. Global South 2. Global North – First World 3. Global South – Third World
B. INSIGHTS (What new insights or learning did you gain from the topic?)
1. Before reading the material/understanding the lesson, I thought that classifying
countries as core, semi-periphery, and periphery are the only one to classify countries as they are. However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that there are other ways to classify them but still vague about the idea if they have the same concept. 2. Before reading the material/understanding the lesson, I thought that third world countries are like countries that are experiencing extreme poverty. However, reading the material/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that it is not. Yes, mostly are relatively poor but many are not. They actually can compete in terms of economic stability as a country to stand on its own but they are just categorized as one because their GDP is compared to bigger countries having big GDP’s. 3. Before reading the material/understanding the lesson, I thought that globalization affects everything about the society, economy, and everything about the “global”. However, reading the material/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that my thought is somehow related. Yes, it is affected but both in positive and negative ways. As per in the module says, cities are the most benefited in globalization but also the most affected one when it comes to global problems. QUESTIONS (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want explanation more?) 1. Is World System Theory the same with the country labelling “first”, “second”, and “third” world countries? 2. How do countries are classified as first, second, or third world countries? Is there a criteria that should a country fit to recognize them as either of the three?? 3. What’s the difference between the “north” and the “south”?
