Chapter 5: A World of Regions

A. DIFFICULT CONCEPTS (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

1. First World Problems
2. Cold War
3. Global South

B. INSIGHTS (What new insights or learning did you gain from the topic?)

1. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I thought that people in third
world countries have low economic stability and many of them are poor. However,
reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I now think/ realize that the third
world country has different levels of economic stability. Some of them are poor but
many are not.
2. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I thought that there are two
only World Hierarchy which are the First and Third World. The First world was
associated with rich, industrialized countries while the third world started just a
vague catchall term for non- Alliance countries, came to be associated with
improved states. However, reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I now
think/ realize that there are three world hierarchies which are composed of the First,
second, and third world hierarchies.
3. Before reading the material/ understanding the lesson, I thought that there is no
inequality between global south and global north. However, reading the material/
understanding the lesson, I now think/ realize that there is a gap between the global
south and global north because the inequality between richest and poorest
countries is widening. Nations in the “global North” are considered fully
“developed,” in that they have strong, stable economies with abundant capital and
access to resources. The global “South,” includes nations that are poor and
underdeveloped.
