Subject Matter: Basic Dance terms

Objective/s: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Define the basic dance terms.
2. Strengthen student’s creative skills in live performance through the study of
craft and technique.

Concept No. 3.2

1. Dance, the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given
space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking
delight in the movement itself.

2. Dance is a performing art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences of human


movements.

3. There are many dance terms that you will encounter in the following lessons. These are
some of them…
3.1. Saludo – also called curtsy, refers to a bowing gesture
Curtsy – is a traditional gesture of greeting, in which a girl or woman bends her knees
while bowing her head

3.2 Partners side by side – a position where pairs face front and stand side by side with
the girl on the right

3.3 Inside hand /foot – the hand or foot nearest to one’s partner when pairs stand side by
side

3.4. Outside hand/foot – the hand or foot away from one’s partner when pairs stand side
by side

3.5. Free hand/foot – the hand that is not doing anything or the foot that is not supporting
the weight of the body

3.6. Hands on waist – to position the hands on the waist with knuckles in and fingers
pointing to the near

3.7 Clockwise – a circular movement following the hands of the clock

3.8. Counterclockwise – a circular movement following the opposite of the clock movement

3.9. Three-step turn – turning to the right ( R ) or left ( L ) using three steps, moving
clockwise or counterclockwise
3.10. Whirl turn – a turn when one foot is raised to pivot to one direction

3.11. Arms in reverse T position – arms are bent at the sides, forearms parallel to the
direction of the head

3.12. Kumintang – raising the hand upward and rotating the wrist to a clockwise or
counterclockwise direction
