Definitions
For better understanding to the discussions that follow, the following terms are hereunder after defined:
Rhythm
It is a measured motion or flow, characterized basically by recurrence of elements or features as beats,
sounds, or accents.
Rhythms
Denote an aspect of the quality of movement, which is sometimes thought as dance. Structured forms, which
start creative rhythmic movements, are sometimes called rhythm.
Dancing
It is a means of expressing one’s emotions through movement disciplined by rhythm. It is an act of moving

“danson” which means to stretch. All dancing is basically made up of stretching and relaxing movements.
Dance

Scope of Rhythmic Activities

It is the response of a person displaying his emotional mental reaction to rhythm. In all nature, every
individual makes rhythm like foot tapping, head movement, body sway while music is playing. In other words,
the body moves a physical response or as an expression of feelings and the fundamental principles of time,
space, and force are observed.

Fundamentals of Rhythm
To better facilitate the learning of dances and other rhythmic activities, we should first understand the
elements of rhythm, elements of movement space, and the qualities of movements.

Elements of Rhythm
1. Underlying pulse or beat. The underlying beat is the steady continuous sound that is heard or felt
throughout any rhythmical sequence. The constant steady pulsation is called the pulse beat. It is the steady
sound which serves as the constant measure upon which all rhythmic structure or relationship depends. The
underlying beat determines the time signature of a piece of music or movements.
2. Measure. This refers to the identical grouping of underlying beats.
3. Rhythmic Pattern. This refers to a definite grouping of sounds or beat related to the underlying beat. It is
also called the melody pattern because the rhythmic pattern because the rhythmic pattern follows the words
or melody.
4. Phrasing. A musical phrase is a group of measures that gives the feeling of unity. The end of a phrase may
suggest a change in direction or movement.
5. Accent. This force or emphasis given to any one beat in a series of pulse beats in a measure.

Fundamental Movements
There are three fundamental movements: the locomotor, nonlocomotor, and the manipulative skills.
1. Locomotor movement to move the body from one place to another or to project the body upward as in
jumping and hopping.
Examples of locomotor movements:
Walking Hopping Galloping Marching
Running Skipping Sliding Trotting
Jumping Twirling Leaping
Draw Steps Stomping

2. Non-Locomotor movements are performed without appreciable movements from place to place or
movements of the various parts of the body in fixed base.

a. Flexion – bending or shortening of a body part occurring at a joint.

Example: knees bend, full knees bend, trunk forward bend
b. Extension – turning, twisting or circling
Example: head twist, trunk twist
c. Armshoulder Circling
Example: right and left arm circle forward and backward
d. Pendular – swinging or swaying arms are forward, backward or sideward
Example: arms swinging sideward and overhead, body swaying right and left
e. Percussive – striking and hitting; pushing and pulling
Example: arm strike with close fist, hit with both hands
f. Vibratory – shaking and beating
Example: shake arms and hands, shake hips and shoulders
g. Sustained – a slow, smooth flowing movement with a balance of movement throughout the entire series.
Example: arms swinging from side to side, arms circle swing continuously.
h. Suspended - a sharp movement followed by a series of slow or prolonged movements until a peak is
reached
Example: both arms circle swing three to four times counter clockwise and stop movement with arms
diagonally forward, upward.

3. Manipulative skills are involve object handling that develops manipulative skills like ball skills. Other
objects promote other skills like better hand and eye and coordination.

Dance is composed of different elements. The elements of dance can be best remembered by using the
acronym BEST which stands for Body, Energy, Space and Time.

Body
A dancer’s body is the figure or shape seen by others. The body is capable of forming an infinite variety of
shapes while dancing.

Energy
Energy is about the variations in variations in movement flow that includes the amount of force , tension,
weight, manner, and quality in which a movement is performed.

Space
A dancer may move around the available space and move from one place to another. Personal space refers to
the area surrounding the dancer’s body. Space also refers to the place where the dancers paths or patterns
his or her performance to produce a relationship with other dancer to create a visual representation or effect.
