Good afternoon everyone, we are gonna tackle the unfamiliar words that were mentioned in the story
of Makato and the Cowrie Shell.

A mahout is a person who rides and trains elephants.

Cowrie or Cowry is the commonly used name for a group of sea snails, marine gastropod
mollusks in the family Cypraeidae. Cowrie Shells are shells belonging to the genus Cypraea.
They were used as a form of currency in 1200 BCE.

Khun Wang is a rank bestowed upon a person which the king trusts most. The person that has
this rank will be recognized as the most important person of the king’s kingdom.

In Thailand, Sukhothai means “dawn of happiness”. It is the first independent kingdom


established by the people during ancient times.

Phra Ruang is a legendary figure from Thai’s history. He is usually described as the founder of
the first Thai kingdom who freed the people from the rule of the ancient Khmer Empire. He is a
chieftain with superb, excellent and unnatural oratorical skills.

Clasp means to hold or grasp something firmly using our hands.

Scrape means to push or pull a sharp implement across a surface or object as to remove dirt or
other matter.

(9th slide)

Prosperous means to be successful and rich in materials. It also interprets that someone or an
organisation is abundant in resources that will sustain their needs.
