What is a reflexive verb?


How do you identify it?

● A reflexive verb is where the person/thing


performing the action also receives the action. You
perform the action on yourself.
In Spanish a reflexive verb has a reflexive pronoun!
eg. to wash oneself = lavarse

The reflexive verb when conjugated:


● The reflexive pronoun is placed directly
before the conjugated verb.
● The reflexive pronoun changes to match
the subject of the verb.

E.g. Normalmente me levanto a las seis.
What is the “yo” form of the reflexive verb levantarse?
(1) Conjugate the “yo” form of the root verb:
levantar = Yo levanto
(2) Then add the reflexive pronoun directly before the
conjugated verb
levantarse = Yo me levanto OR SIMPLY me levanto
bañarse
to bathe
ponerse (algo)
to put on
(something eg.
clothes)
peinarse
to comb
one’s hair
ducharse
to shower
relajarse
to relax
entrenarse
(para el futbol etc.)

to train

lavarse las manos (hands)
