(1) b. ÷
Step 1
The figure given in the problem has four equal partitions out of which one is missing.
The 4 parts of the problem figure can be shown as -
1 ×2
^
×3 4
÷
^
It can be observed that part 2 and 3 are diagonal mirror images to each other.
Step 2
According to this observation, we can infer that the parts in the opposite diagonals in the
problem figure are the diagonal mirror images of each other and figure in option (b) is the
diagonal mirror image of part 4 of the problem figure.
(2) d. y - x = 9
Step 1
It is given that x and y are positive.
Both digits of the number xy may be equal if the number xy = 22.
22 is a two digit number of positive digits and hence x = y is true.
Step 2
4x = y
The digit y of the number xy is 4 times the digit x, if xy = 14.
14 is a two digit number of positive digits and hence 4x = y is true.
Step 3
y + x = 8x
⇒ y = 8x - x
⇒ y = 7x
Step 4
y - x = 9 is possible only if 9 - 0 = 9
So, y = 9 and x = 0 and the number would be 09, which is one digit number and hence, x - y =
9 cannot be true.
(3) a. 350 meters
Step 1
Given, a man can walk 50 meters in a minute.
We need to calculate the distance he will walk in 7 minutes.
Distance
From the formula, Speed =
Time
Step 2
Speed of the man = 50 meters per minute
Time = 7 minutes
Distance covered in 7 minutes = 50 × 7 = 350 meters.
Step 3
Hence, the man will walk 350 meters in 7 minutes.
(4) d. 7
Step 1
Given, 85 × 46 − 53.
To find the units digit of the calculation, we will do the calculations with the unit digits only.
Step 2
The units digit of 85 × 46 − 53 = the units digit of 85 × the units digit of 46 − the units digit of 53
= 5 × 6 − 3
= 30 − 3
= 27
Step 3
Hence, the units digit of 85 × 46 − 53 is 7.
(5) b. jnts
Step 1
We are given four set of different letters. If we calculate the position of the alphabets in every
set of numbers:
dins: 4, 9, 14, 19. The numeral position is increasing by 5 in every consecutive term.
jnts: 10, 14, 20, 19. There is no fixed pattern in the numbers.
fkpu: 6, 11, 16, 21. The numeral position is increasing by 5 in every consecutive term.
kpuz: 11, 16, 21, 26. The numeral position is increasing by 5 in every consecutive term.
Step 2
We can see that the position of alphabets in all given sets is increasing by 5, except for option
b, which is the correct option.
(6) 15
Step 1
It is given that the express train runs every 5th day from Singapore to Bangkok.
Step 2
We can say that the number of days after which the train will run again, has to be a multiple of
5.
Step 3
Since, the train went on Tuesday, after 5 days the train will run again on Sunday, Friday,
Wednesday, and so on.
Step 4
By this way we can say that the number of days after which the train will again run on a
Wednesday = 5 × 3 = 15 days
Step 1
Let us look at a class of 3 students:
Step 2
Do we see any pattern here?
Yes
For each student:
Rank from top + Rank from bottom = 1 + Number of students in class
Let us verify for class of 3 students:
Sum of ranks: 4 4 4
Class of 4 students:
Sum of ranks: 5 5 5 5
Step 3
Ryan and Nur are ranked 13th and 14th respectively from the top in a class of 49 students.
For both of them, the sum of their ranks from top and bottom will be: 49 + 1 = 50.
For Ryan:
13 + His rank from the bottom = 50.
This means, his rank from bottom = 50 - 13 = 37th
For Nur:
(8) 133738
Step 1
The number of men in the town is 17268.
Step 2
The number of women is 35059 more than the number of men. This means that the number
of women is 17268 + 35059 = 52327.
Step 3
We know that the number of children is 11816 more than the number of women. From step 2,
we know that there are 52327 women in the town.
Thus, the number of children = 52327 + 11816 = 64143.
Step 4
The total population of the town will be equal to the sum of the number of men, women and,
children, which is equal to: 17268 + 52327 + 64143, or 133738.
(9) 140
Step 1
Given, total time of journey = 9 hours
Speed for the initial 4 hours = 90 Km/hr
Speed for the remaining 5 hours = 180 Km/hr
Average speed can be calculated by using the formula below:
Total distance
Average speed =
Total time
Step 2
= 360 km
The distance covered in the remaining 5 hours = 5 × 180
= 900 km
Therefore, the total distance covered = 360 + 900
km
= 1260
Step 3
= 140 km/h
Step 4
Hence, the average speed of the man was 140 km/h.
Step 1
According to the question, the sum of the digits of a 2-digit number is subtracted from the
number. The resulting number has the units digit of 4.
Step 2
Let us assume the number 60 has that property.
Now, the sum of the digits of number 60 = 6 + 0 = 6
Subtracting the sum of the digits of number 60 from 60
60 - 6 = 54
Similarly, subtracting the sum of the digits of number 61 from 61
61 - 7 = 54
.
.
.
.
Similarly, we can say that subtracting the sum of the digits of all numbers from 60 to 69 have
units digit 4.
Step 3
Therefore, all the numbers from 60 to 69 have this property.
