ODR Labels
The product identification label shown below is an example for a specific ODR. Product
compliance label is a generic label for each shipped ODR.
Radome is a water- and windproof cover that protects the W3310 and W3315 antennas.
The radome is covered by a thin layer of hydrophobic coating that prevents the water to
collect on the antenna. This minimizes the risk of signal dispersion caused by water
drops and minimizes the formation of ice on the antenna radome.
The hydrophobic coating may be damaged if the radome is touched – either with a
sharp metal object (i. e. screwdriver or wrench) or with fingers. Sharp objects remove the
coating by scratching it off. Touching the radome with bare fingers causes grease marks
that reduce water repellency.
NOTE: Chec k that the r ec eived O DR’ s r adome is c over ed w ith pr otec tive
c ar dboar d/plas tic c over . If the pr otec tive c over is damaged or mis s ing,
c ontac t Aviat Netw or ks c us tomer s er vic e.
Keep the cover on the radome during the installation procedure and remove it before the
alignment procedure.

CAUTION: Do not use the pigtail cables to hold, hoist or swing the ODR. Applying
force to the cables might damage the connections.
CAUTION: Do not cut the pigtail cables when unmounting the ODR. Disconnect the
cables at the cable joiners. Reverse the ODR cabling steps described in section

2. Set the mounting plate waveguide interface polarization. The current position of polar-
ization markings on the ODR matches V (vertical) marking on the mounting plate.
NOTE: RFS antennas ar e s hipped ver tic ally polar ized. This s tep is only
needed if hor izontal link polar ization is r equir ed.
Use the wrench to unscrew the marked screws (see Setting the Polarization on RFS
Antenna – Step 1 on page 26
NOTE: If pos s ible, c hange the polar ization of the ODR on the floor to
avoid damaging the w aveguide adapter O -r ing and dr opping the mounting
s c r ew s .
Rotate the mounting plate together with feeder clockwise for 90 degrees.
CAUTION: Do not pull the waveguide interface out of the antenna to avoid damaging
the antenna feed.
26 AVIAT NETWORKS
WTM 3300 INSTALLATION MANUAL
Fasten the four screws back. Check that the mounting plate (feeder) polarization equals
the planned link polarization (changed to Horizontal in the figure below).
3. During the ODR attachment procedure, pay special attention to the position of
ODR polarization markings. See W3310 and W3315 Mounting (Variants with Integrated
Antenna) on page 18 and W3310 and W3315 Mounting (Variants with Integrated
Antenna) on page 18 to choose the ODR orientation correctly. Align the polarization
markings on the ODR with markings on the mounting plate. Aligned Horizontal Polar-
ization Markings on page 27 shows correctly aligned markings for a horizontally polar-
ized link.
Figure 2-29. Aligned Horizontal Polarization Markings
CAUTION: When verifying the correct ODR polarization, always make sure the
ODR polarization markings match with those on the mounting plate of the antenna.
When visually comparing the waveguide position with the actual marking on the ODR,
the polarization does not match. The reason for this is the integrated antenna (used
with W3310 and W3315 variants) that shifts the polarization for 90 ° – from vertical to
horizontal and vice versa.
4. Before attaching the ODR, put the rubber O-ring onto the antenna waveguide and
apply a thin layer of silicon grease. Rubber O-ring and silicone grease are included in the
antenna package.
The use of silicone grease is mandatory. Dry attachment might damage the O-ring.
CAUTION: Before attaching the ODR to a parabolic antenna, remove the red pro-
tection label from ODR waveguide interface as shown on ODR with Mounting Holes
on page 28.
5. Slide the ODR onto the O-ring. Attach the ODR to the mounting plate with four
screws that are included in the antenna package. When fastening the screws, follow the
numbered sequence – always fasten the opposite screws first.
6. Fasten the screws using multiple steps. Initially, the screws should only be tightened
with minimum force and in accordance with the numbered sequence (See ODR with
Mounting Holes on page 28). After the ODR has been gently attached to the mounting
plate, fasten the screws firmly by alternating among the numbered screws until the ODR
is firmly secured.

ure Setting the Polarization on Xian Antenna – Step 1 on page 29).
A short line on the interface indicates the current polarization (currently Vertical in the
figure below).
NOTE: If pos s ible, c hange the polar ization of the ODR on the floor to
avoid damaging the w aveguide adapter O -r ing and dr opping the mounting
s c r ew s .
Rotate the waveguide interface ring clockwise for 90 degrees to change the polarization.
CAUTION: Do not pull the waveguide interface out of the antenna to avoid damaging
the antenna feed.
Fasten the four screws and check that the interface's polarization marking is aligned
with the desired polarization marking on the antenna (changed to Horizontal in the fig-
ure Setting the Polarization on Xian Antenna – Step 2 on page 30).
3. Attach the ODR to the antenna. During this process, pay special attention to polar-
ization markings on the opposite side of the ODR. See Vertical ODR Polarization on
page 23 and Horizontal ODR Polarization on page 23 to choose the ODR orientation cor-
rectly.
Align the polarization markings on the ODR with markings on the mounting plate.

Grounding
The use of appropriate lightning protection devices and correct site grounding are co-
related issues. One cannot be considered separately from the other. Aviat Networks equip-
ment warranty requires correct protection and grounding practices. Aviat Networks
reserves the right to exclude from warranty the repair or replacement of lightning dam-
aged equipment that are caused by non-complying installations.
Install the WTM 3300 where proper electrical outdoor grounding is available. Typically,
the grounding connection is attached directly to the mounting pole. If not already
present, suitable structure-to-earth grounding connection must be prepared before the
installation (minimum 16 mm2 cable diameter – 6 AWG).
Visually inspect the deployment site grounding points. Site grounding covers all the
equipment within the building or tower at the same ground potential which ensures
there is no possibility for damaging currents to flow among the equipment elements or
through them to the ground.
In order to protect indoor equipment, ECD devices and power supply devices, surge pro-
tection circuits are recommendable on all copper cables (Ethernet and DC) at their
entrance to the building. Surge arrestors need to be properly grounded.
If the PoE injector is equipped with an internal surge arrestor, it must be installed near
building entry point and, if possible, properly grounded.
Properly protected WTM 3300 includes grounding points at:
1. ODR
2. Cable grounding point - where it enters the building or cabinet
Figure 2-62. Typical WTM 3300 Grounding Scheme
ODR Grounding
Follow these steps to properly ground the ODR.
1. Locate the green 2 m long earth strap in the ODR packaging. Strap is fitted
with crimp lugs.
2. Fasten the earth strap to the ODR grounding lug (M5 Phillips screw).
3. Locate a position for attaching the earth strap to the pole grounding point.
This should be as close as possible below the ODR to ensure the downward-
angled positioning of the ground wire.
4. Run the ground wire down from the ODR to its ground point using the
shortest available path. Do not loop or spiral the ground wire.
5. Scrape any paint or oxidation from the pole grounding point to ensure a
proper low-resistance contact.
6. Fasten the distant end of the earth strap to the pole grounding point using
an appropriate screw.
Figure 2-63. Earth Strap (green) Attached to ODR
Cable Grounding
Cable ground connections onto the ODR cable must be correctly weatherproofed to
ensure there is no possibility of water entry into the cable jacket. Weatherproofing pro-
cedure is explained in the section Weatherproofing for Cables and Connectors on page
50
CAUTION: Improper cable grounding may result in excessive electromagnetic
interference or electrical discharge.
46 AVIAT NETWORKS
WTM 3300 INSTALLATION MANUAL
The ODR–ECD Ethernet cable must be correctly grounded and fitted with an appro-
priate lightning surge suppressor to prevent equipment damage due to lightning strikes
on the antenna or its support structure.
For more general guidelines on ODR–ECD cabling, see Aviat Best Practices Guide.
Ethernet cable is grounded using shielded RJ45 connectors on both ends – the con-
nectors are properly terminated and soldered to the shield of the cable. Grounding con-
nection of the WTM 3300 Ethernet cables follows the surge arrestor grounding
connection (see section RJ45 Surge Arrestor on page 48).
WTM 3300 cable kit includes a pre-terminated shielded Cat5e cable. In cases when the
cable needs to be cut and re-terminated (crimped), follow the below described steps to
ensure proper ground connection for the cable.
1. Strip the outer sheath insulation back for 2.5 cm (1 in). Roll back the foil
shield insulation and wrap the drain wire around the foil. Do not remove
any insulation from the conductors.
2. Untwist the pairs to within 0.3 cm (1/8 in) of the jacket. Arrange the wires
according to TIA/EIA 568A & 568B standards. Flatten and align the wires.
Make one straight cut across all the conductors, removing approximately 1.3
cm (1/2 in). Insert wires into loading bar. Cut off the excess wires.
3. Hold the connector in front of you with the locking tab down. Orient the
wires so connector Pin 1 aligns with cable Pin 1, etc. Pin 1 is on the far left.
Slide the wires into the Cat5e connector. The cable jacket with shield must
extend into the connector about 0.6 cm (1/4 in) for strain relief and
shielding connection.
4. Insert the plug into a crimp tool and squeeze it.
5. Test the cable connection with a standard Ethernet cable tester.
DC Cable Grounding
DC cable is grounded using a DC surge arrestor. Aviat Networks recommended DC surge
arrestors are equipped with terminated ground wire which must be attached to the
nearest grounding point.
To make sure the DC cable is grounded properly, follow the installation instructions
that are included in the package. See the section Lightning Protection on page 48 for
more details on lightning protection.

Weatherproofing Procedure
The ODR cable kits include rolls of vinyl and butyl mastic tape for connector weather-
proofing. A three-layer wrap process is recommended:
1. Apply an initial layer of vinyl tape to protect the connector against sealing
with mastic tape used in step 2.
2. Apply a layer of mastic (Butyl) tape. It is this tape that provides the
weatherproofing.
3. Complete the wrap process by applying a top layer (or multiple layers) of
vinyl tape to support good amalgamation and adhesion of the mastic tape
and to provide UV protection.
NOTE: Wher e mas tic tape is us ed to w eather pr oof c onnec tor s , a thr ee-
layer pr oc es s is r ec ommended. The c entr al layer of vinyl tape is applied

mas tic tape s eals c leanly to the pr imar y s ur fac es .
50 AVIAT NETWORKS
WTM 3300 INSTALLATION MANUAL
3. Wrap with mastic tape using a half to 2/3rds width overly, and ensure there
is at least a 25 mm (1 in) attachment onto the primary surfaces to either
side (cable jacket, ground wire and connector).
4. For the cable ground, ensure there is no possibility of water penetrating
between the ODR (PoE/Data) cable and its ground wire by first applying and
forming mastic tape around the ground wire where it lies against the cable.
The ground wire must always exit from the bottom of the wrap.
5. 4. Starting at the bottom, wrap the mastic tape in an overlapping pattern,
slightly stretching the tape as you wrap. By wrapping from the bottom you
help to ensure there are no ridges or pockets for water to sit in.
NOTE: Ther e mus t be a full s eal of mas tic tape onto the pr imar y s ur -
fac e for w eather pr oofing integr ity.
6. Firm over by hand and squeeze the tape along its edges to form it to the
connection. Use tear-off section of the mastic tape backing to protect your
hands. Check that there is no possibility of water entry before proceeding to
the next step.
7. Cover the mastic tape with layers of vinyl tape.
8. For a cable ground, wrap from the bottom, with the first layer extending 25
mm (1 in) each side of the mastic tape. Subsequent layers must extend no
less than 25 mm (1 in) each side of the previous layer.
9. Wrap the tape in an overlapping pattern at not less than a half width.
Slightly stretch the tape while wrapping but stop stretching it for the last
two turns of the top layer to prevent the curl-back.
10. Squeeze the completed wrapping to ensure all layers are firm.
NOTE: To avoid dis plac ement of the mas tic tape, do not s tr etc h the final
layer (s ) of vinyl tape ac r os s s har p c or ner s and edges .

Position of Cables
To furthermore exclude the possibility of ODR water ingress, pay special attention to the
position of the cables at the installation site.
Attach the cables to the antenna pole with cable ties.
To prevent water ingress and to minimize strain that the cable weight could induce on
the ODR connector:
l Make sure the cables are tethered to the antenna pole slightly below the
connector height.
l The cables (PoE/Data, -48 VDC and ground) must be positioned in an S-
shaped curve.
The S-shaped cable curve is necessary for two reasons.
1. Cable weight does not cause strain on the ODR connectors.
2. It prevents the water from flowing over the ODR connectors.

Visual Alignment
Visual alignment of the radios in a link is the initial step for establishing a link. To help
with achieving optimal visual alignment over a larger distance, the WTM 3300 allows
aligning with a visual alignment tool (VAT). Visual alignment tool is part of the visual
alignment kit. See section Visual Alignment Kit on page 11 for kit details.
There are two ways of mounting the VAT on the ODR.

Sound-based Alignment
WTM 3300 offers two types of RSSI indication. Sound-based alignment method is inten-
ded for initial (directional) antenna alignment. To check the sound-based RSSI level,
plug the headphone connector to the LMC port as shown Headphones Connected to
LMC Port on page 61.
60 AVIAT NETWORKS
WTM 3300 INSTALLATION MANUAL
To engage the alignment mode, connect standard headphones to the LMC port. Antenna
alignment mode sets the Tx power and sensitivity to the highest level which eases the
search for the main beam of remote ODR in both directions.
NOTE: Attac hing the headphones to the L MC por t w ill automatic ally put
ODR into antenna alignment mode. Dur ing ac tivated antenna alignment
mode, s ens itivity of ODR pow er detec tion is inc r eas ed. Dis c onnec t head-
phones after the alignment pr oc es s is done.
The higher the sound indicator pitch, the stronger the received signal.
Figure 2-79. Headphones Connected to LMC Port
RSSI-based Alignment
Sound indicator-based alignment is a standard procedure that normally ensures proper
performance of the radio link. However, if there’s a need for more precise alignment, the
exact RSSI level should be measured with a voltmeter.
RSSI-based alignment procedure:
Remove the cover from the LMC port on the ODR housing. Connect the voltmeter to the
ODR using the RSSI adapter cable (must be ordered separately, see Optional Solution Elements on page 10)
NOTE: Attac hing the RSSI adapter c able to the L MC por t w ill auto-
matic ally put O DR into antenna alignment mode. Dur ing ac tivated
antenna alignment mode, the s ens itivity of O DR pow er detec tion is
inc r eas ed. Dis c onnec t headphones w hen alignment is c ompleted.
When measuring the exact RSSI level with a voltmeter, compare the actual RSSI level
with the expected RSSI that has been calculated during network link budget pre-
paration.
Fine alignment of the ODR is achieved by turning vertical and azimuth micro alignment
screws.
When the optimal RSSI level is achieved, tighten the locking screws (see section Align-
ment Steps for WTM 3310 and WTM 3315 (Embedded Flat Antenna) on page 62).
Elevation Adjustment
Perform elevation adjustment first – follow the below described steps.
Loosen both vertical locking screws.
Attach the headphones to the LMC port and listen to the sound pitch (see Headphones
Connected to LMC Port on page 61). The higher the sound indicator pitch, the stronger
the received signal.

Azimuth Adjustment
After the elevation adjustment is done, perform the azimuth alignment.
Loosen both azimuth locking screws.
Lift the rough alignment spring and turn the ODR in the desired direction. Rough align-
ment slots allow moving of the ODR in steps of 10 °.
Use the connected headphones to listen to the sound pitch (see Headphones Connected
to LMC Port on page 61). The higher the sound indicator pitch, the stronger the received
signal.
After rough alignment is done, start with micro alignment using the micro adjustment
screw. Micro alignment screw can be turned by hand or by using a size 4 Allen head
wrench. For fine alignment purpose, Aviat Natworks recommends using RSSI-based
alignment. Connect the voltmeter to the LMC port and follow the instructions given in
section RSSI-based Alignment on page 61.
Once the optimum position has been achieved for the ODR node pair, tighten the azi-
muth adjustment locking screws.

Routine Inspections
All sites must be inspected annually or more frequently if subject to abnormal operating
conditions such as particularly exposed sites, or sites subject to salt-spray or heavy
snow/ice loading over winter months.
The inspection should cover the physical installation including ODR, PoE injector, Eth-
ernet cable, cable grounding, equipment grounding, tower and building grounds,
weatherproofing, lightning surge suppressors (if installed) and general site integrity.
Selected ground wires should be resistance checked and then compared with previous
checks to ensure there has been no significant change.
The operational performance of the radio and associated equipment should be checked
against their as-built figures using the ePortal or Provision alarm and performance indic-
ators.
Trend Analysis
Use available current and historical WTM 3300 alarm and performance data to determ-
ine any trend that may lead to a failure. Check for the following indicators:
l Reducing received signal levels
l Gradually increasing bit errors or an increasing count of seconds with error
l Changes in transmit power
l Increased frequency of rain fade or other fade conditions
l Increasing occurrence of other weather related changes in performance
l Increasing occurrence of a particular hardware failure
Fault Analysis
All faults, once cleared, should be the subject of a fault report. The data presented in
these reports should be analyzed from time to time to check for any common threads,
which may point to a particular weakness in the design, installation, or maintenance of
the network or to a specific component.
The time taken to restore service and the affected parts used should also be analyzed to
see if improvements are possible in the maintenance procedures, maintenance training
and spares holdings.
78 AVIAT NETWORKS
WTM 3300 INSTALLATION MANUAL
Training
Properly trained and experienced planning and installation personnel are essential for
establishing and maintaining high integrity in a new network. Similarly, properly
trained network management and service personnel are essential for the continued good
condition of the network.
The personnel training should be reviewed from time-to-time to ensure they maintain
expertise in their area of work, and on the installed base.
Spares
Spares holdings should be reviewed on regular basis to ensure the correct quantity and
type are held, and held at the most appropriate locations.
Analysis of spares usage will show any trend for excessive use of spares, which may
point to a weakness in the deployment or manufacture of the item.
Spares holdings should also be checked from time to time and if necessary brought up to
the current hardware and/or specifications.
Commissioning Procedure
Commissioning is a set of tests and final review procedures that ensures the WTM 3300
based link:
l Is installed correctly
l Is correctly configured
l Has passed all tests
l Is operating and running alarm and error-free
l Has had all relevant commissioning data recorded
l Is ready for traffic carrying duty
A typical commissioning process is summarized in the table below:
Table 4-1. Commissioning Process
80 AVIAT NETWORKS
WTM 3300 INSTALLATION MANUAL
Troubleshooting
Before going to a site to handle a problem, try to obtain the following information:
l Does the fault require immediate attention?
l Who is the best-placed person to handle the fault?
Confirm the nature and severity of the reported fault, its location, capacity and mod-
ulation. Ask:
l Is just one WTM 3300 link affected or a number of links in the same
geographical area?
l Is the path down completely or is traffic passing but with a BER alarm?
l Could the fault be in the equipment connected to the WTM 3300? Are there
alarms on other, connected equipment?
l Is it a hard or intermittent fault?
l Do alarms confirm which end of an alarmed link is faulty?
l Could the weather (rain, ice, high wind, temperature) be a factor in the
reported fault?
NOTE: If the fault s ugges ts a r ain fade or other w eather r elated fade
c ondition and it matc hes the pr evailing w eather c onditions , do not take
any ac tion until the w eather impr oves .

General Hazards
The following table describes the general hazards that must be addressed when planning
and installing the WTM 3300.
For more information on health and safety when using Aviat Networks products, refer to
Aviat Best Practices Guide.
Topic Information
ESD ESD (electrostatic discharge) can damage electronic components. Even if components
remain functional, ESD can cause latent damage those results in premature failure.
Circuit Over- When connecting the WTM 3300, determine the effect this will have on the power supply
loading circuit protection devices, and supply wiring. Check WTM 3300 power consumption spe-
cifications and the supply capability of the power supply system. This check of capacity
must extend to the dc power supply and not just to an intermediate connection point.
Protection from When installing, servicing or inspecting an antenna always comply with the following:
RF Exposure - Locate the antenna such that it does not infringe the RF exposure guidelines for general
public.
- Stay aware of the potential risk of RF exposure and take appropriate precautions.
- Do not stand in front of or look into an antenna without first ensuring the associated trans-
mitter or transmitters are switched off.
- At a multi-antenna site ask the site owner or Operations for details of other radio services
active at the site and for their requirements/recommendations for protection against poten-
tially harmful exposure to RF radiation.
- When it is not possible to switch transmitters off at a multi-antenna site and there is
potential for exposure to harmful levels of RF radiation, wear a protective suit.
- Do not look into the waveguide port of an ODR when the radio is active.
Ground Con- Reliable grounding of the WTM 3300 must be maintained. Refer to instructions in the
nections WTM 3300 Installation and Commissioning manual for grounding of the ODR, Ethernet
cable, lightning surge suppressor (optional), and PoE injector.
There must be no switching or disconnecting devices fitted in ground conductors.
Lightning Surge All WTM 3300 Ethernet cables must be fitted with the specified PoE injector compatible
Suppressor surge suppressor(s).
Mains Power WTM 3300 DC power and traffic – Ethernet cables are not to be routed with any AC
Supply Routing mains power lines. They are also to be kept away from any power lines which cross them.
Power Supply An appropriate power supply disconnect device should be provided as part of the building
Disconnect installation.
NOTE:
NOTE For USA - In restricted access areas install the WTM 3300 in accordance with
articles 110-26 and 110-27 of the 2002 National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70, or to
any subsequent update to this code for the relevant articles.
