Homeroom guidance module from DEPED

Activity:

Hi there! I hope that you are doing well. Last week, you were able to know the
significance of practicing self-discipline in your everyday life and its importance in facing
personal changes and growth. The lessons in this module will help you recognize the different
ways and situations on how to show respect to other people. This module will let you value the
impact of respect, especially in maintaining good relationship and connection with the people
around you.

One of the best and most beautiful things about humanity is that we're all different from
one another; each person is unique in their own very special way. So, instead of fearing those
differences, it's important for us to recognize them and embrace them, and above all be
respectful.

We always hear the statement “Respect is not given, but earned”. This module is
designed to help you establish meaningful social connections by respecting the differences and
similarities of the people in the society. Recognizing the unique beliefs, cultures, and values of
different individuals, groups, and communities is an effective way to deal with the diversity of
people. Respect means honoring a person’s existence, and accepting his/her characteristics
without any judgment regardless if they are similar or different from us.

When you are able to show respect on the diversities and rights of the people around
you, you will then have a harmonious relationship with them.

You discover new things about yourself every day. As you become aware of the
similarities and differences you have with other people, you might ask many why’s such as why
you are different and similar from others.

This is understandable because you and other people come from various places, have
different family backgrounds, family histories and orientation. You might have countless,
different experiences from others. Add the fact that there are factors that might affect the way
you relate yourself to other people. Take note though that you can always improve the way you
relate to other people, through effective communication and by genuinely respecting their
beliefs, cultures, and values. There are numerous ways to respect others effectively. It is a social
skill that we must enhance at all times.

Being a grade 9 learner, it is normal to be conscious about expressing yourself without

disrespecting others. You must be mindful on how you treat other people as they might
misinterpret your actions or words. As you go along with the journey of life, you must also have
a wider respect and acceptance for others. Respect and acceptance are lifelong processes that
you must always take on a positive note.

Respect for others is an essential way to maintain good relationships with the people
around you. It is the foundation of your connection to others, the same way that other people’s
foundation in having an effective connection with you, too.

Now that the entire world is facing a pandemic, respect is even more essential and
powerful. We respect by manifesting non-discrimination of people who were afflicted by the
virus. When we do not stigmatize the people affected by this virus or their families, we show not
only respect but compassion to others.

With all of these, may we forget that showing respect means:

Regarding and treating

Everybody with kindness
Showing good manners and
Politeness to all
Exhibiting equal courtesy as well as
Civility and consideration, and
Thriving with tact and a thoughtful attitude

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

A. With what you have learned from our discussion, how do you intend to improve your practices
of respect? Write 2 ways.
We need to be understanding. Always great them before saying the things we need to say and
say thank you.

B. We are accustomed to show respect to other people especially to those who are older than
us. What if the ones we need to show respect for are the people who are much younger than us?
Answer the following questions in 2 sentences.
a. Why do we need to show respect to people who are younger than us?
Regardless the age even if the one we are talking to is much younger to us we need to show
them respect. We need to show our respect to people who are younger to us because we need
to be an example to them and because even they are much younger to us that doesn't mean
they don't understand what we say and how we speak to them.

b. What ways can we give to show respect to people younger to us?

We can show our respect to people younger to us by respecting them like how we respect
people that are older to us. We need to be kind and always think before saying or doing
something. Also consider their feelings because we might hurt their feelings without us realizing
