FINDING THE AREA OF IRREGULAR FIGURES MADE UP OF SQUARES AND

RECTANGLES USING SQUARE CENTIMETERS AND SQUARE METERS

I. Learning Competency with Code

Finding the area of irregular figures made up of squares and rectangles
using square centimeters and square meters (M4ME-IVA-55)

II. Background Information for Learners

In the previous lesson, you learned about finding the perimeter of different
figures. In your previous year, you also learned about finding the area of a
square and a rectangle.
This Learning Activity Sheet for the week deals with finding the area of
irregular figures. To find the area of an irregular shape that is made up of
squares and rectangles, you have to follow the following steps:
a. Divide or cut the figure into squares and rectangles;
b. Find the area of each square and/or rectangle made;
c. Add the areas of the squares and/or rectangles made to find the area
of the irregular figure; and
d. Express the area in sq. cm (cm2 ) or sq. m ( m2).

Example 1:
Juliet and her sister Haillie made a vegetable garden as shown below. Find the
area of their garden.

5m
6m
3m
8m

Solution 1:

6m 5m

3m

3m 5m
1
There are two rectangles formed.
Area of Rectangle 1 : 3 m x 5 m = 15 sq. m or 15 m2
Area of Rectangle 2 : 3 m x 6 m = 18 sq. m or 18 m2
Total Area of the figure : 15 sq. m + 18 sq. m = 33 sq. m or 33 m2

Solution 2:

3m
3m 5m

3m

8m

There are two figures formed, a square and a rectangle:

Area of the square: 3 m x 3 m = 9 sq. m
Area of the Rectangle : 8 m x 3 m = 24 sq. m
Total area of the figure : 9 sq. m + 24 sq. m = 33 sq. m

Example 2 :
5 cm

5 cm
15 cm

Solution 1: Area of square 1 : 5 cm x 5 cm = 25 sq. cm or 25 cm2

Solution 2 : Area of rectangle : 15 cm x 5 cm = 75 sq. cm or 75 cm2
Solution 3 : Area of square 2 : 5 cm x 5 cm = 25 sq. cm or 25 cm2
Total area of the figure:
25 sq. cm + 75 sq. cm + 25 sq. cm = 125 sq. cm or 125 cm2

Exercise 1
Direction: Find the area of the irregular figure.

7 cm

5 cm
18 cm

Exercise 2
Find the area of the irregular figure.

6m

9m

15 m

2. Guide Question

How do you find the area of an irregular figure that is made up of squares and
rectangles?

3
4
Exercise 1
Area of the square : 7 cm x 7 cm = 49 sq. cm or cm2
Area of the rectangle : 18 cm x 5 cm = 90 sq. cm or cm2
Total area of the figure : 49 sq. cm + 90 sq. cm = 139 sq. cm or 139 cm2
Exercises 2
Area of the rectangle : 6 m x 9m = 54 sq. m or m2
Area of the rectangle : 4 m x 9 cm = 36 sq. m or m2
Total area of the figure: 54 sq. m + 36 sq. m = 90 sq. m or 90 m2
