ACTIVITY 2. MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES

1. What is the relevance of the Multiple Intelligences Theory in language learning and
teaching?

Multiple Intelligences is a term which has first appeared in Howard Gardner’s multiple
intelligences theory. The latter is considered an important contribution to cognitive science and
constitutes a learner-based philosophy which is “an increasingly popular approach to
characterizing the ways in which learners are unique and to developing instruction which
responds to this uniqueness” (Richards & Rodgers, 2001, p123).

According to the Multiple Intelligences idea, humans are multidimensional beings who
must develop not only their cognitive ability but also their physical, creative, and spiritual
abilities. Language learning has traditionally been viewed solely as a cognitive activity, but
when brain research is taken into account, this view becomes erroneous and educationally and
socially problematic. It isn't easy to separate the cognitive and affective sides. Language
conveys emotions, and emotions influence language.

Language learning activities can be designed to cater to various intelligence. Accepting

Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences, for example, has different consequences for
teachers in terms of classroom education. According to the thesis, all seven bits of intelligence
are required to perform efficiently in society. Teachers should therefore consider all intelligence
to be equally valuable. This is in stark contrast to traditional educational systems, which place
a significant focus on developing and applying verbal and mathematical intelligence.

The ability to utilize words efficiently both orally and in writing is referred to as verbal
linguistic intelligence. It is characterized by sensitivity to the sounds, meanings, and functions
of language. The ability to hear and understand rhythm, pitch, and melody is the second
aspect of musical-rhythmic intelligence. In fact, using this intelligence in language learning can
help students focus and connect with their inner selves, stimulate creative processes, eliminate
distracting sounds from within or outside the classroom, and, most importantly, foster a relaxed
but motivating and productive classroom environment.

Multiple intelligences are considered advantageous in education, particularly in

language learning and teaching. This way, each intelligence can be cultivated and utilized
within a specific learning or teaching framework to improve learners' linguistic intake and
output.

2. How you can as a language teacher makes use of your knowledge of this theory in
maximizing language learning?

According to the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, educators should recognize and

educate a more extensive range of talents and skills. Furthermore, Multiple Intelligence is an
excellent tool for teachers to develop appealing strategies to present learners with language
acquisition exercises. Within this cognitive paradigm, "language is not considered as restricted
to a linguistic perspective but incorporates all aspects of communication" (Richards and
Rodgers 2001: 117), allowing pupils to absorb information in the method that is most
comfortable for them (Arnold and Fonseca, 2004).

The role of Multiple Intelligences is vital in language learning; it provides an excellent

opportunity for learners to acquire a foreign language. Providing learners with the chance to
represent their type of Intelligence helps them identify effective learning strategies, which is
valuable for their future profession. Multiple Intelligences improve learners' self-understanding,

and control of self-study leads to better self-management. Multiple Intelligence offers teachers
an easy way to use and examine the best teaching approaches and strategies in language
learning. Every instructor has students with different types of Intelligence, other points of view,
and additional strength and weakness. It's a helpful and effective tool for them to teach and
explain in a way students understand easily and quickly.
Language learning with Multiple Intelligence helps learners value their strengths,
increase their weak skills and abilities, and improve their academic achievements.
