Narcotics – a drug or other substance that affects mood or behavior and is consumed for non-
medical purposes example: fentanyl, dormicum, morphine
Generic drug – is a medication created to be the same as an existing approved brand-name drug in
dosage form
Compassionate drugs – means making a new, unapproved drug available to treat a seriously ill
patient when no other treatments are available.
High alert medication – are drugs that bear a heightened risk of causing significant patient harm
when they are used in error example: lidocaine, adrenalin, propofol etc.
Ex. Tallman lettering – is the practice of writing part of a drug’s name in upper case letter to help
distinguish sound-a-like look-a-like drugs from one another in order to avoid medicators errors. Such
as acetaZOLAMIDE. acetolHEXAMIDE.
