Satisfactory Warning Action

The latest sample as supplied has been taken as representative of the lubricant from the stated source. The analysis results and recommendations set out in this report are based on the tests performed on the
relevant sample. Which tests we perform depends on how the sample was labelled, any other description given to us of its use and any other instructions received.
LABCHECK Lubricant Analysis - Glossary

The Castrol LABCHECK service utilises the latest analytical techniques and computer programming to offer an
advanced lubricant analysis package that provides a valuable lubricant monitoring tool for the maintenance teams

Lubricant properties reported on LABCHECK lubricant analysis reports include

Viscosity A measure of the resistance of a liquid to flow. Commonly referred to as the 'thickness of an oil'. Measured at 40 °C
and or 100 °C.
Closed Flash Point Closed flash point is the temperature at which the lubricant will flash when exposed to a naked flame. Reduced flash
points are indicative or hydrocarbon dilution i.e. gas or fuel.
lnsolubles A test for the total solids contamination in a lubricant such as dirt, oxidation by-products and wear debris.
Base Number Previously known as Total Base Number (TBN) is a measure of the reserve alkalinity of an engine oil and its ability to
neutralise acids derived from the combustion process.
Acid Number Measures the acidity of the lubricant which indicates deteriation due to the oxidation process.
Strong Acid Number Strong Acids are Organic acids formed during oxidation process.
Water This is a measure or the water in the lubricant up to its saturation point. It is reported as % by Volume or for more
critical systems ppm.
PQ lndex This is a measure of ferromagnetic particles > 7 μm reported as an index.
Asphaltenes Give an indication of heavy fuel derived components from raw fuel ingress and/or products of combustion from blow by
gases.
Oxidation A FTIR method to assess the oxidation by the change in molecular structure that occurs during the oils ageing
process.
Nitration A FTIR method to assess the nitration by the change in molecular structure that occurs by the formation of
nitrous oxides.
Particle Count Particle count consists of analysing the solid contamination in a lubricant by counting the number of particles
and classifying the degree of contamination according to the particle size. They are reported in accordance to
ISO 4406 -2018 which classifies the number of particles that are >4 μm, >6μm & >14 μm or in accordance
with AS 4059 Differential which classifies the number of particles that are 6-14 μm, 14-21 μm, 21-38 μm,
38-70 μm & >70 μm.
ICP Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry is an elemental analysis technology capable of detecting most
elements up to 7μm. Reported in ppm. Typical elements are below
Aluminium Pistons, bearings, housings, fuel
Antimony Bearings
Boron Coatings on components subject to high temps and loads. Lubricant and coolant derived
Calcium Lubricant additive or water contamination
Chloride Salt water contamination
Chromium Piston rings, bearings and gears
Copper Bearings, gears, oil coolers, pipe-work, piston-rod glands
Iron Cylinder liners, crankshafts, piston rings, gears
Lead Bearings and coolers
Magnesium Casings, housings, lubricant additive
Manganese Cylinder liners, valves and gears
Molybdenum Piston rings and lubricant additive
Nickel Bearings, valves, gears, fuel
Potassium Salt Water
Phosphorus Lubricant derivative
Silicon Dust, dirt, fuel
Silver Bearings
Sodium Salt water, coolant, fuel, lubricant additive
Tin Bearings, coolers
Titanium Alloying element in steel, lubricant additive
Vanadium Fuel
Zinc Lubricant additive or water contamination
