Class XI B (2021-2022)
OBJECTIVE

This study of mummification tells about the Egyptian thought. The purpose of mummification
was to keep the body intact so it could be transported to a spiritual afterlife.

Thus preserving bodies in as lifelike a way as possible was the goal of mummification, and
essential to the continuation of life. The Egyptians believed that the mummified body housed
one’s soul or spirit. If the body was destroyed, the spirit could be lost and not make its entrance
into the afterlife.

The objective of the study

 Egyptian civilization
 First mummy found
 About mummification
 Process of mummification
 Materials and tools used in mummification
 The movies related to mummies

THE MUMMY AND THE PROCESS OF MUMMIFICATION

ABSTRACT:

BACKGROUND:

 Egyptian civilization
 About mummification and the process of mummification
 First mummy to be found
 Tools and materials used in mummification
 Movies related to mummification

METHODS:

It consists of data that is collected after analyzing a large set of relevant data acquired through
watching videos and qualitative methods.

RESULTS:

Mummification is the preserving process which is made by Egyptian in olden days. The
Egyptians preserve the body because the Egyptians believed that the mummified body was the
home for this soul or spirit. If the body was destroyed, the spirit might be lost.

CONCLUSION:

This report emphasizes the idea behind mummification and the Egyptian civilization.
FIRST MUMMY:

• The oldest known naturally mummified human corpse is a severed head dated as 6,000
years old, found in 1936 AD at the site named Inca Cueva No. 4 in South America.

EGYPTIAN CIVILIZATION:

Egyptian civilization developed along the Nile River

ABOUT MUMMIFICATION:

• Mummification is the process of preserving the body after death by deliberately drying or
embalming flesh.

• This typically involved removing moisture from a deceased body and using chemicals or
natural preservatives, such as resin, to desiccate the flesh and organs.Mummies are also
created by unintentional or accidental processes, which is known as "natural"
mummification.

• This can happen when a dead body is exposed to extreme cold, very dry conditions, or
some other environmental factor that mitigates against decay.

• The oldest mummy on record in North America, found at Spirit Cave, outside of Fallon,
Nevada, is an example of natural mummification. Wrapped in a Tule mat, it was found in
a shallow grave and preserved by the dry atmosphere and rarefied air of the cave.

• In contrast, the oldest known Egyptian mummy that was naturally preserved dates to just
over 5,500 years ago. That mummy was of a young woman whose body was wrapped in
linen and fur after she died. Another famous naturally preserved mummy is the oldest
known in Europe: Ötzi the Iceman, who lived about 5,300 years ago.

• The oldest deliberately interred mummies were unearthed in the Camarones Valley of
Chile.

• This valley is in the far north of the country, in a region called the Atacama Desert.

• Discovered in 1940, and originally believed to be between 1,500 and 2,000 years old, the
individual was subsequently radiocarbon dated in the 1990s and determined to be over
10,000 years old

• A narrow strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, this desert
receives little rainfall and is considered one of the driest places on Earth.

• The mummies there were found in 1917 by the German archaeologist Max Uhle at
Chinchorro Beach near the town of Arica.
• The mummies belong to what Uhle called the Chinchorro culture (9,000 to 3,100 years
ago), who lived in what is now southern Peru and northern Chile. Chinchorro people
settled in coastal villages and relied on fishing as their primary means of subsistence,
using fishing hooks made out of shellfish

• They also hunted animals on land and gathered edible plants from the surrounding area.
The Chinchorro practice of mummification began around 7,000 years ago, some two
millennia before the first known Egyptian mummies, according to the same .

• Although the practice became more sophisticated over time, the basic process remained
the same. It involved the removal of soft tissue, organs and brains.

• The hollow body was then dried out and reassembled. The skin was stuffed with reeds,
dried plants or other vegetal matter. Sticks were inserted into the arms and legs. Clay
masks were placed on the corpses' faces and wigs were often attached.
• The finished mummy was then painted. During the early phases of Chinchorro society
(about 7,050 – 4,500 years ago), mummies were painted with black manganese.
• From 2500 B.C. until the practice died out sometime during the first century B.C., red
ochre replaced the manganese. Not just the elite but all segments of Chinchorro society
were mummified, including infants, children, adults and even fetuses.
PROCESS OF MUMMIFICATION:

• Insert a hook through a hole near the nose and pull out part of the brain

• Make a cut on the left side of the body near the tummy

• Remove all internal organs

• Let the internal organs dry

• Place the lungs, intestines, stomach and liver inside canopic jars

• Place the heart back inside the body

• Rinse inside of body with wine and spices

• Cover the corpse with natron (salt) for 70 days

• After 40 days stuff the body with linen or sand to give it a more human shape

• After the 70 days wrap the body from head to toe in bandages

• Place in a sarcophagus (a type of box like a coffin)

TOOLS USED IN MUMMIIFICATION:

• Brain hook

• Oil jar

• Funnel

• Embalmer's knife

MATERIALS USED IN MUMMIFICATION:

• linen

• sawdust

• lichen

• beeswax
• resin

• natron

• onion

• Nile mud

• linen pads

• frankincense
MUMMY RELATED MOVIES:

• The mummy return

• The mummy

• The mummy tomb of the dragon emperor

• The journey to the centre of the earth

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:

RESEARCH DESIGN AND APPROACH:

The research design adopted a mixed- method approach. A power point presentation was utilized
in this study.

SAMPLING PROCESS AND DATA COLLECTION:

As a team, we had put a lot of efforts on shaping our report on this enlightening topic. We used
data collected from social media as our raw materials. After surfing and collecting enough details
from youtube and other programs, we condensed our points and sorted out the process of
mummification.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY:

 We can’t get the information when did the mummification was stopped.
 We can’t get the full information about Egyptian civilization.
 We can’t get the full information about first mummy to be found.

CONCLUSION:

This research has witnessed that many are still interested in learning about the Egyptian
civilization and the process of the mummification and also in gaining knowledge about those
histories. The present generation is eager in knowing about the preservation of body which done
by the early Egyptian’s who lived thousands of year before. This is the progressive sign for the
development of our country and the world together.

STUDENT’s REFLECTION

I am so happy to do the presentation with my friends. Our topic of presentation is the THE
MUMMY AND THE PROCESS OF MUMMIFICATION. I have done the presentation on this
topic. My teammates helped me in collecting information and picture which is needed in the
background. I enjoyed the most in this presentation is while presenting my part in the
presentation. The difficulty I faced in this presentation is selecting the images for the
background of the presentation. Firstly, our topic is about mummification but only about
mummification is not enough for us, so I decided to add some other points like Egyptian
civilization, about mummification, first mummy found and these additional topics worked well.
This is all about the my topic. Thank you for giving this opportunity to do the presentation with
my friends.
