directing the greatest possible amount of Sun’s radiation to the pot holding the
food by means of reflection.
converting the radiation to heat energy.
retaining this heat energy by insulating the cooker.
You can use mirrors, aluminium foil and certain types of metallic paint to
reflect radiation. The depth of the cooker can affect the amount of radiation
received. As the cooker gets deeper, the amount of shadow inside the cooker
increases. Therefore, a shallower cooker usually has a higher cooking efficiency.
You should make sure your cooker can effectively absorb and convert
radiation into heat. This can be accomplished by using dark materials for the pots.
Using insulation decreases cooking time and increases the efficiency of the
cooker. Various styles of insulation are used, most commonly a glass, plastic, wood,
or cardboard.
You can also increase the efficiency of your cooker by placing bricks inside
the cooker, or by using a thicker pot. These methods allow cooking after the Sun
has gone down, at the expense of longer preheating.

2a. Dark materials are good absorbers of radiation and can effectively absorb and
convert radiation into heat. [1]
b. Insulation slows down the heat transfer away from the solar cooker and hence
increases its efficiency. [1]
c. A solar cooker with bricks or a thicker pot has a higher heat capacity. [1]
It absorbs a large amount of energy with only a small rise in temperature,
therefore, it takes longer time to heat up. [1]
When the Sun goes down, the cooker can still cook by releasing the absorbed
energy, therefore, it can cook even the Sun has gone down. [1]

b. By law of conservation of energy, the speeds of the stones are the same. [1]
Since the horizontal component of the velocities of the stones are the same, the vertical
components of the velocities of the stones are also the same. [1]
Thus, the stones reach the sea at the same velocity. [1]

ii. The temperature drops abruptly when the satellite is shielded from sunlight at the

the coating of materials has high specific heat capacity. [1]
Therefore, the sensitivity of the electronic components inside would not be affected. [1]

Place the illuminated object in front of the convex lens. Move the translucent screen
until a sharp image is caught.
Measure the object distance (u) and the image distance (v). [1]
Change the object distance and repeat the previous steps for several times. [1]
Plot a graph of u against v and draw a straight line of u = v on the graph. [1]
The intersecting point of the straight line and the curve is (2f, 2f). [1]
