PROF. JONATHAN C. BORROMEO

Professor, Mathematics in the Modern World

Greetings of peace and liberty!

As is often emphasized in our discussions in the subject, Philippine Politics and

Governance, politics is anything but an isolated sphere of reality. It embraces and overlaps with
the circumstances of our social, mental, economic, and even spiritual ways of living. Gas prices,
rates of police brutality, costs of basic necessities, and our freedom to express dissent are only a
number of realities that are subject to the influence of political affairs. And even in the absence
of people who realize it, politics shall always remain powerful enough to bring a nation to
prosperity with good practices and a grounded application of principles, or drive it to its knees
with unchecked power, corruption, and a blatant disregard for the rule of law.

Political Science students such as ourselves are constantly taught to stand at the forefront
of social responsibility and societal reformation, by means of solidifying theories, ideas, and
concepts with intentional acts of political involvement. And given the current political climate
brought about by the standings in the election polls, this letter expresses our united call to
temporarily suspend our Mathematics in the Modern World class tomorrow, May 11, 2022, to
allot due time for us to act as watchmen of honesty and fairness during one of the most crucial
turning points of our lives as Filipinos. We unequivocally understand that this subject is salient in
honing our knowledge and understanding of the present conditions concerning modern-day
politics in light of yesterday’s events, however, we believe that such knowledge is not meant to
stagnate within the four corners of the classroom. We see the need to take action in order to
sustain justice in our panic-stricken country, and we intend to respond accordingly.

It is no secret that as scholars of the state, we are under oath to defend the country and its
people, as it is they who bestowed our education as an instrument for exercising intelligent
means of debate and activism. Our classes teach us that it is of utmost importance to exercise our
right to suffrage, and fulfill our responsibilities as members of the civil society. It should
therefore be understood that this is no longer a fight between political candidates or colors; this is
the fight of a nation against an anticipated corrupt, deceitful, and lawless government. It is in our
best interest to use this day to have the clarity of mind to participate in political discussions, and
practice our right to protest.
We hereby enact our right to peaceful assembly, and in doing so, we ask for your support
towards this petition as we recognize that your approval will be another step towards the true
goal of honing students of Political Science. There shall be no words to express our overflowing
gratitude.

Sincerely,
