the National Anthem and an invocation.
4. Ma’am. Mariel Guiyab is the presenter of the slides and they played a video regarding
the rules and regulation during the webinar.
5. Mr. De Lima called Ms. Ederlina Baleña who is the EPS in Social Studies for an
Opening Remarks.
6. At 8:37 AM, Ma’am. Roxana O. Tagama, Araling Panlipunan Teacher in San
Bartolome High School presented us the Rationale/Objectives of the Webinar.
7. Ma’am. Marietta Dela Cruz gave few words since the Principal was having technical
difficulties at first to enter the link.
8. At 8:41 AM, Dr. Zaida M. Padullo, Principal of San Bartolome High School was able
to join the link and gave her Welcome Remarks.
9. At 8:50 AM, Ma’am. Roxana O. Tagama introduced the first speaker who is Dr. Mary
Pauline V. Saquing.
10. She introduced herself and started the talk by asking the participants who are
Plantitos and Plantitas. She also asked if the participants like receiving flowers. She
even encouraged male participants to also answer the question.
11. She also used Mentimeter to ask the participants what are the words that first come
into their mind when they hear Gender and Development. Many participants
answered.
12. Initially, she mentioned that if there is a Gender Responsive Society, there has to be
Gender Responsive Education, and it should be the focus of teachers. They should
understand, appreciate and imbibe the need for change. She said that awareness
raising would promote understanding of ideas necessary for societal change. A gender
mainstreaming methods should integrate it into policies and programs for women and
girls; men and boys.
13. She said that participants should be familiarized with Gender-based concepts. For
that, she asked them to grab a pen and paper. She asked them to draw a man and
woman within 2 minutes.
14. After 2 minutes, she called Ma’am. Tagama and she shared her drawing. She said that
the distinction between her drawing is that the woman is wearing skirt, the man is not.
The woman’s eyes is bolder than the man is. After that, Mrs. Cyris De Leon also
shared her drawing with the audience. She said that the girl has hair and wearing skirt.
15. The speaker then shared a previous drawing from her previous webinar. On the photo,
she asked the participants to notice the breast of the woman, the stitches under the
belly button and for the man, the chest and abs. She asked if the participants’ drawing
are smiling, some of them said yes.
16. She said that the purpose of this activity is to show the difference between man and
woman. She said that there are markers of gender identity and people sometimes
interchange this with the definition of sex. Gender is being used because the word sex
is an awkward word. She clarified that gender is socially and culturally defined, but
sex is the biological categorization, namely male, female or intersex. She said that
intersex is not exclusively male, not exclusively female or otherwise.
17. On the other hand, Gender identity/expression is a person’s own sense of being male,
female or another identify beyond this binary, and how they chose to appear. It may
or may not be aligned with the biological sex. They like to express themselves
through clothing, appearance, behavior, etc. These things would help better
understand gender-based issues and how to resolve them.
18. In the areas of analysis, the speaker showed a picture wherein the woman and man has
a gap, which is an unequal distribution of opportunities. Next photo shown was the
about the gender relations, which are the different social values assigned to males and
females that create hierarchy being male as masculine. Next photo was about gender
bias, which is the prejudice actions or thoughts that affects a person based on
perceived gender. She said that men could also experience gender-based. She
emphasized that textbooks and learning materials should not express gender bias.
Another photo shown was about gender discrimination, which is an exclusion or
restriction based on one’s gender, rather than skills. Next photo shown expresses
gender norms, which are the collectively held expectations and beliefs about how
people should behave and interact in specific social settings. It results acceptance and
conforming, but can also result to social exclusion when the norms are not met. After
that, a photo shown about all gender-based violence.
19. Regarding the aspirations and goals, the speaker encouraged women and girls’
empowerment, and another aspiration is gender equity. There are tools and
approaches to achieve gender equity – gender lens, gender analysis, intersectionality
and lastly men-embraced engagement.
20. The speaker then mentioned the issues that happened in reality, that boys are now
being harassed, LGBTQ children also experiences bullying. She emphasized that
teachers play a big role in the solution of gender-based issues in students. Everyone
should prevent some sad realities that is still continually happening at home, at work,
etc.
21. The speaker ended her talk with a very sad poem entitled “I Got Flowers Today”.
22. At 9:40 AM, Mr. De Lima encouraged everyone to ask questions. He read a comment
from Ma’am. Mabelle Caboboy about the visual about fighting violence/abuse. Mrs.
Cyris De Leon raised a question about the progress of awakening the people about
Gender and Development. The speaker said that there are different sectors taking part,
but in Education, there is already Gender Responsive Education. Another question
from Ma’am. Beverly was about the gender education of elementary students since
most victims are children. The speaker said that they are trying to reach DepEd and
there is already a DepEd order about it, and she believed that it reached elementary
schools. Another question was raised by Ma’am. Aurora, about identity crisis, but Dr.
Saquing said that it would be best if the speaker tomorrow will answer it since her
topic is about Psychology of Gender. Next question came from Mr. Gio, he said that
in the US, trans genders were allowed to compete in female and male sports. The
speaker reminded that there was an activity before involving pageant for transgenders.
She said that it really depends on the policy of the competition.
