Vocabulary (3 pts)  Enamel: white outer surface of a tooth.
 Crown: the part of the tooth that sticks up above the gum.
 Root: the part of the tooth that is below the gum.
 Dentin: hard, porous tissue underneath the enamel that is harder than bone.
 Pulp: soft center of a tooth that has blood vessels and nerves.
 Cementum: bone-like tissue that covers the root and “cements” or holds the tooth to the jawbone.
 Gums (gingiva): tissue of the upper and lower jaws that surrounds the base of the teeth.
 Nerves: cables that carry electrical impulses between your brain and the rest of your body.
 Primary Teeth (baby teeth): your first teeth.
 Permanent Teeth (adult teeth): come in after you lose baby teeth.
 Plaque: sticky deposit on teeth in which bacteria grow.
 Cavity: permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of the teeth.
 Gum Disease: a serious gum inflection that damages the soft tissue and can destroy the bone that supports the
teeth.
 Flossing: cleaning between the teeth.
 Vitamins: help the body grow and work the way it should.
 Calcium: a mineral often associated with healthy bones and teeth.
 Fluoride: a mineral that occurs naturally and is released from rocks and into the soil, water, and air.
 Minerals: a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound having an orderly internal structure and
characteristic chemical composition, crystal form, and physical properties.
 Sugar: a sweet crystalline substance obtained from various plants, especially sugar cane and sugar beet, consisting
essentially of sucrose, and used as a sweetener in food and drink.
