Difficulties encountered by Undergraduate Students in Oral Presentations in University

Selangor

CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY

3.1 Introduction

In this chapter, the researcher would elaborate on the methods of collecting data for the
research pertaining to the title of the paper which is the study on the difficulties experienced
by undergraduate students in oral presentations in University Selangor. This chapter also
deals with the sample of targeted respondents, instruments used and the procedures involved
in data gathering.

3.2 Respondents

For the study, the researcher obtained data from 100 respondents who were undergraduates
varying in different courses all together. The reason for doing so is that by having a range of
students responding towards the instrument will provide the researcher with a solid, general
and good feedback pertaining to the issue on the difficulties experienced by undergraduate
students in oral presentations. The google form starts with Section A which is the
respondent’s biodata that includes gender, age, race, faculty, languages that the respondents
are fluent in and language proficiency. From the 100 sets of questionnaire distributed, 35%
(35 students) of the respondents were males while the rest of the 65% (65 students) were
females. 69% (69 students) of the respondents that answered the questionnaire were in the
range of 18 to 23 years old while the rest of 25% (25 students) came in the range of 24 to 29
years old. A few respondents 6% (6 students) were in the range of 30 years old and above.
Most of the respondents, 54% (54 students) consisted of Indians, followed by Malays at 22%
(22 students), Chinese at 19% (19 students) and other races 5% (5 students). The respondents
that were randomly chosen consist of 46% (46 students) came from Education and Social
Science faculty respectively followed by 15% (15 students) from Engineering faculty and
14% (14 students) from the faculty of Information Technology. Apart from that, the faculty
of Business Studies consist of 13 students which is 13% followed by 11% (11 students) from
the faculty of Biotechnology and 1% (1 students) from the faculty of Centre Foundation and
General Studies. As for the languages that the respondents were familiar with as expected

English and Malay came in with the biggest number with every respondent knowing the
language. Tamil followed with 56% (56 students), Chinese followed with 36% (36 students)
and other languages followed with 19% (19 students). From the 100 respondents given the set
of questionnaire, 1 students rated his/her English proficiency as poor, 18% (18 students) rated
as average, 39% (39 students) rated as good while the rest of the 42% (42 students) rated
themselves as excellent in their English proficiency. The findings will be provided in the
form of pie chart.

3.3 Instruments

Quantitative data is obtained through measuring objects in order to obtain precise results. The
advantage of using the quantitative approach is that outcomes may be more accurately and
objectively determined. Quantitative approaches are often created to offer data summaries
that support broad conclusions about the subject being studied. The reason why questionnaire
is under quantitative method is because it enables speedy data analysis, quantitative surveys
ask questions with definite, frequently numerical responses. Despite not being intended to
gather descriptive data, they are excellent for obtaining enormous volumes of data. The
advantage of employing questionnaires in research is that they frequently contain both
closed- and open-ended questions, or a combination of the two. Depending on their
objectives, this enables researchers to gather both qualitative and quantitative data. Therefore,
the study uses a quantitative method, with all 100 undergraduate students filling out an online
questionnaire utilising a Google form. The survey consists of 20 closed-ended questions on a
5-point Likert scale (Strongly agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree, Strongly disagree). It is
divided into three sections: the first section contains the respondent's biodata, the second
section contains ten questions about the difficulties faced by undergraduate students in giving
oral presentations while studying at University Selangor, and the third section contains ten
questions about how to overcome the difficulties faced by undergraduate students in giving
oral presentations while studying at University Selangor. The questions are adapted from
Students’ difficulties on oral presentation in classroom interaction by Nurwahyuni (2019).

3.4 Procedures involved in data gathering

Before the data gathering, the researcher prepared the questions needed for the data
collection. The researcher started doing the google form on Monday, 23 rd May 2022 at

UNISEL library between 10 am to 12 pm. After that, the researcher handed out google form
through online individually to the respected respondents. The google form was attached with
a cover letter to justify the use of the data received towards the research and giving a brief
insight on the study being done.

During the data gathering, the google form was sent to 100 undergraduate students in
University Selangor during Mid Term break which started on 27th May 2022 and ended on 6th
June 2022 because the students tend to be much more free during this time. We started to
distribute the google form between 2 pm to 5 pm. As the questionnaire only takes up to 5 to
10 minutes to answer, taking up the suggested time would be ample for the students to
complete the given questions. This is because if the questions were to be answered in a
rushing manner, the validity and honesty of the feedback given would be entirely valid. Thus,
the data outcome received would not be entirely sensible and parallel with the objectives set
by the researcher.

After gathering the data, the researcher started to rearrange the number of respondents
according to their answers. The researcher rearranged the number of respondents on
Wednesday, 22nd June 2022 in UNISEL library between 2 pm to 4 pm.

3.5 Conclusion

The researcher believes that collecting data from the respondents via Google form would be
the best alternative. Thus, it is way convenient and since it was distributed during the break
the respondents could answer it with a clear mind set and give us their honest opinion or
perspective. Since, the data collected is in a form pie chart we could clearly identify the
percentages without putting in much effort. Besides, it can be clearly said that the
respondents’ answers vary and it is very crucial for us to know it as well. Nevertheless, there
is not a slight doubt that these difficulties experienced by University Selangor undergraduate
students could definitely be overcome with proper guidance and the desire of not giving up.
To wrap it up, each student can definitely excel in their oral presentation and score it with
flying colours.
