THE ISM IN NASB STATUS

‫ اﻟـَﺤﺎُل‬THE STATE
‫ اﻟـَﺤﺎُل‬describes the state (How-ness) of the Subject and/or the Object, or the
circumstance in which the action of the Fe’l was carried out.

For example, consider the following sentences:

ً‫ﻀﱡﺮًﻋﺎ َوُﺧْﻔﻴَﺔ‬
َ َ‫ﺗَْﺪﻋُﻮﻧَﻪُ ﺗ‬
…… you call upon Him (with) humble beseeching and (in) concealment. [6:163]

ِّ َ‫ أَْرَﺳْﻠﻨَﺎَك َﺷﺎِﻫًﺪا َوُﻣﺒ‬D‫إِﱠ‬

‫ﺸًﺮا َوﻧَِﺬﻳًﺮا‬
We have sent you as a witness and one who gives good news and a warner.
[33:45]

à Haal answers the question, ‘how?’

ِ َ‫)ﻧ‬.
à It is always ‘Indefinite’ (‫ﻜَﺮة‬
à It always comes at the end of a sentence.

More examples:

َ ‫ﺼْﻴَﺤﺔُ ُﻣْﺸِﺮﻗ‬
‫ﲔ‬ ‫ﻓَﺄََﺧَﺬﺗْ ـ ـُﻬُﻢ اﻟ ﱠ‬
So, the shriek seized them, as ones who enter morning. [15:73]

‫ﻓَِﺈَذا َﺟﺎءَ َوْﻋُﺪ اْﻵِﺧَﺮِة ِﺟ ْﺌـﻨَﺎ ﺑُِﻜْﻢ ﻟَِﻔﻴًﻔﺎ‬

And when the last promise / promise of the Hereafter comes, We will bring you
all, as groups. [17:104]

ِ ِ ِ
ُ ‫ﺸُﺮُﻫْﻢ ﻳَـْﻮَم اﻟْﻘﻴَﺎَﻣﺔ َﻋﻠَٰﻰ ُوُﺟﻮﻫِﻬْﻢ ﻋُْﻤﻴًﺎ َوﺑُْﻜًﻤﺎ َو‬
‫ﺻ^ﻤﺎ‬ ُ ‫َوَْﳓ‬
and We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection [fallen] on their faces, as
ones who are blind, dumb and deaf. [17:97]

1) Underline the words expressing the ‘State’ ‫ﺤﺎُل‬

َ ‫ اﻟـ‬in the following ayaat:

ً‫ُﻫﻢ ﺑَـﻐْﺘَﺔ‬Dَ‫ﻓَﺄََﺧْﺬ‬
So, We seized them suddenly…. [7:95]

‫ﲑا َوﻧَِﺬﻳًﺮا‬ ِ ِ ِ
ً ‫ﻟْـَﺤ ِّﻖ ﺑَﺸ‬f ‫ أَْرَﺳْﻠﻨَﺎَك‬D‫إﱠ‬
Indeed, We have sent you, [O Muhammad], with the truth as one who gives good
news and a warner. [2:111]

ِ ‫وآﺗَـ ْﻴـﻨَﺎ ﺛَـﻤﻮَد اﻟﻨﱠﺎﻗَﺔَ ﻣْﺒ‬

‫ﺼَﺮًة‬ ُ ُ َ
And We gave Thamud the She-camel, as a visible sign. [17:59]

‫ﺴًﻔﺎ‬ ِ
َ ‫ﺖ َﻋﻠَْﻴـﻨَﺎ ﻛ‬
َ ‫ﺴَﻤﺎءَ َﻛَﻤﺎ َزَﻋْﻤ‬ َ ‫أَْو ﺗُْﺴِﻘ‬
‫ﻂ اﻟ ﱠ‬
Or you make the heaven fall upon us, as you have claimed, in fragments. [17:92]

‫َِﳜﱡﺮوَن ﻟِْﻸَْذﻗَﺎِن ُﺳﱠﺠًﺪا‬

they fall down upon the chins as ones in prostration… [17:107]

َ ِّ‫ﺸﻮَن ُﻣﻄَْﻤﺌِﻨ‬
‫ﲔ‬ ُ ‫ض َﻣَﻼﺋَِﻜﺔٌ ﻳَـْﻤ‬
ِ ‫ﻗُﻞ ﻟﱠْﻮ َﻛﺎَن ِﰲ اْﻷَْر‬
Say, "If there were upon the earth angels walking securely….. [17:95]

‫ﺖ ِﻣ ْﻨـُﻬْﻢ ﻓَِﺮاًرا‬
َ ‫ﻟََﻮﻟﱠْﻴ‬
…… you would have turned away from them, in flight [18:18]

‫ﺻ^ﻔﺎ‬ َ ِّ‫ﺿﻮا َﻋﻠَٰﻰ َرﺑ‬

َ ‫ﻚ‬ ُ ‫َوﻋُِﺮ‬
And they will be presented before your Rabb, in rows…. [18:48]

‫ﲔ ِﻣـﱠﻤﺎ ﻓِﻴِﻪ‬ ِِ ِ
َ ‫ﱰى اﻟُْﻤْﺠِﺮﻣ‬
َ ‫ﲔ ُﻣْﺸﻔﻘ‬ ََ َ‫ﻓ‬
….. and you will see the criminals fearful of that within it. [18:49]
