TOPIC: “Everyone should own a dog.

Hello everyone! My name is Fanasina and I am an A2C student at 7:30. Before I
get started, let me ask you 2 simple questions: do you love dogs? Do you have
one?
Honestly, I was not fascinated by dogs before. But 2 years ago, my neighbour
knocked at my door with a box in his hand. The box contained a little puppy that
he begged me to keep because its mother died from poisoning. My neighbour
explained that he was forced to give some puppies away to those who wanted
to take care of them. I felt sad hearing that story. Although the thought of
picking up poops disgusted me, I finally accepted to take the only one. I must
confess that sharing home and life with dogs is not easy at all, nevertheless it is
still an amazing experience that I’d like everybody to have. For those who
already have dogs, you must have seen that they are really beneficial and for
those who don’t, my purpose today is to persuade you to own at least one dog.
I have 3 reasons to support my stand. First, we will see that dogs make you
healthier. Second, I will explain what makes them better friend than humans.
And last but not the least, I will show you that they make you safe. Don’t worry,
I only take 10 minutes of your time and please leave your questions at the end
of my talk. Ready or not, let’s begin?

You might say that dogs are dirty and their dirtiness is unsafe for
people’s health. However, you might be surprised because dogs keep people in
good health physically and psychologically. You might think that having a dog in
the house will increase the chances of becoming allergic to it. Thus, if your
family is allergy-prone, owning a dog is not recommended. Nonetheless, studies
have proven this untrue. Indeed, having a dog can prevent allergies. I mean it
will actually help to reduce the risk of allergies A study reported by Medical
News Today shows that the bacteria carried by dogs’ mouth do boost people’s
immune system which increases tolerance to allergies. In other words, exposure
to dogs can lower risk of asthma and eczema development. Therefore, it’s
imperative that you own a dog since its presence helps to activate body’s
defense and thus makes you healthier.
But there is more to it than that, not only do dogs reduce allergies but they also
improve heart health. In fact, dogs are high-energy companions that love
playing and need exercise. Then, if you own a dog, you have to commit daily
walk at least one time per day. The main thing is that regular walking and
playing with dogs can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides
levels which promotes the proper functioning of the heart. Researchers at the
University of Harvard in Cambridge, MA, suggest that dog owners have lower
risk of heart disease. Hence, the better the heart health is, the longer the
chance to live.
Most importantly; dogs also improve psychological well-being. According to Dr.
Boris Levinson, a psychologist: “Interaction with dogs increases oxytocin levels
which boosts psychological well-being by alleviating depression” For
information, oxytocin is a hormone that acts as a chemical messenger in the
brain and has the power to regulate our emotional responses. In particular, the
higher the oxytocin levels, the lower stress and anxiety become. Therefore, it is
crucial that everyone own a dog.
Not convinced yet? Let’s tackle the second part of my presentation then.

You might be one of those who think that human friends are really
supportive and give advice during difficulties. You might say that you can always
count on them. But what if your human friend is also in difficult situation?
Would he or she put you in priority by helping you to solve your problems first?
You will agree with me that not all time can human friends be there. Many of
them even disappear when we need them the most. This makes the difference
between dogs and humans because never do dogs leave their owners. They are
better friends since they are always by their owners’ side. According to a study
published in the journal learning and behaviour, the greatest benefit of having a
dog is that dogs provide companionship. So, it’s almost impossible to feel alone
at home.
What’s more? Human relationships can be complicated by language,
expectation and judgement. But with dogs, relationship is less complicated. If
we are through hard time, having a non-judgemental, non-verbal, just a loyal
companion can be an incredible help. For example, when I come back home
after a hard day, no sooner have I opened the door than a furry friend greets me
by wagging its tail just to show how enthusiast and happy it is to see me. It’s
difficult not to cheer up after seeing that. Therefore, by providing comfort and
by always staying with their owners whatever happens, dogs are better friends
than humans.
And last but not the least; you might say that that owning a dog will
put the house in a total mess because they like destroying things. So, why
owning one? However, have you taken into account the fact that they can make
you safe because they will protect you at all cost. Trust me; they will literally risk
their lives for their owners. So, you may ask: Why do they act this way? Simply
because they are loyal. And why are they loyal? Looking to dogs psychology,
being evolved from wolves between 19000 and 32000 years ago, dogs are pack
animals and pack mentality leads them seeing their owners as a member of the
pack. In a pack, loyalty is essential in order to survive. Trusting, co-operating and
putting the pack’s interest first are all a natural part of surviving. It would
explain why dogs often put their own lives in danger. As an illustration, on CBS
News report in 2017, one golden retriever was hailed as a hero after the man
slipped and fell in the snow. The dog stayed with him using its body to keep him
warm and barked continually until help arrived. Also according to John Billings,
an American writer: “A dog is the only friend on earth that loves you more than
it loves itself, so it will protect you at all cost.” For these reasons, everyone
should own a dog. If you own a dog, it will protect you.

All things considered, it’s crucial that everyone own a dog. Not only
are they our friend in health in health but also in sickness especially if we suffer
from depression. Besides, the greatest comfort they provide is companionship
that makes them better friends than humans. Above all, they protect at the
price of their life because they love their owners.
To conclude, It is true that dogs may break some things especially shoes, but
never do they break your heart and hurt your feelings. So, I suggest that you
adopt one. And let me know if you are decided. That’s the end of my
presentation. Thanks for your kind intention.
