II. Your response of the video

John Green did a good job at explaining the video and presenting it. It was

described in an episodic style, with clarity regarding the message and particular lines

in the novel Candide.

III. Explain the purpose/theme/aim of the film as you see it

I think Candide is obliged to reject optimism, as is the reader. However, the book's

ending does not support a wholly pessimistic view either. Candide ultimately rejects all

notions of good and evil as well as optimism and pessimism and finds satisfaction in hard

work. The moral of Candide is that everything is not as it seems and that this world is not the

ideal one. Voltaire contends that optimism is foolish and that evil has no teleological aim.  It

is quite confusing if it is in favor of complete pessimism, it is very unclear.

IV. Write a summary of the video

The video is sums up about the Candide, satirical novel published in 1759 that is the

best-known work by Voltaire. As advocated by the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm

Leibniz, it is a vicious criticism of metaphysical optimism that discloses a world of horrors

and foolishness. Leibniz, a philosopher from the seventeenth century, was extensively

criticized in Candide. Pangloss is portrayed by Voltaire as a parody of Leibniz. Leibniz

viewed the universe as having a predetermined harmony, contending that evil only occurs to

draw attention to good and that this world is the best one that could exist since God made it.

Theodicy, a wider school of thought that aims to explain how evil can exist in a universe

made by an all-knowing, all-powerful, and perfectly good God, includes Leibniz's conception

of reality. This school is criticized by Voltaire for its unrestrained optimism. His account

makes the argument that if this is the best world imaginable, why should anyone want to end

suffering? Another satire of a philosopher who is overly abstract is Pangloss. Philosophers

who did not rely on facts learned from an examination of the world were despised by

Voltaire. Pangloss talks about how the world is organized, yet he has little knowledge of it

because he has spent his entire existence in a castle doing nothing. Because he has never had

any first-hand interactions with the outside world, Candide accepts Pangloss' worldview

without inquiry.

V. What values have you learned from the video?

One of the values I’ve learned from the video or the novel of Candide is optimism or the

notion that everything is in perfect order is irrational. For me, it really makes sense because

we are not perfect and the world is full of struggles and difficulties to be perfect. However, it

is how we see, take and handle it. It may not be perfect but we have hopes that we are

holding inside despite of the imperfections in the world there is always a room or rooms for

positivity and good outcomes.
