Task 6.

Read the text about different kinds of transport. What are they?

All people like travelling. It’s very interesting to see

new places, cities and countries. People can travel
for pleasure or on business. There are many kinds
of travelling. For me there is nothing like traveling
by air. It’s more comfortable, and, of course,
quicker than any other transport. There isn’t any
dust and dirt like in a railway station or on a car
journey.

With a train you have speed, comfort and

pleasure. From the comfortable seat of a
railway carriage you have a beautiful view of the
countryside. If you are hungry, you can have a
meal in the dining car; and if the journey is long
you can have a wonderful sleep.

Travelling by ship is also very popular now. It’s

very pleasant to feel the deck of the ship under

Many people like to travel by car. It is interesting,

too, because you can see many sights, you can
stop when and where you want, you don’t have
to buy tickets or carry your suitcases.

A very popular means of travelling is hiking.

It is travelling on foot. Walking tours are very

— READING —
Task 10.

Read the text about holidays around the world. What are these holidays and where are they celebrated?

Holidays are special days for people from different countries and cultures. They are traditionally days
off. It’s a time when people stay at home and don’t work or study.
Every country has several important holidays, which can be national or religious.

Thanksgiving is one of the most popular and

oldest holidays in the US, celebrated on the
fourth Thursday of November. It originated as a
harvest festival, and was celebrated for the first
time by the Pilgrims in 1621. The holiday became
known as the day of thanking God for blessings
such as a good harvest, plenty of food or a
military victory, but today it is more cultural than
religious. There are some traditional foods that
people eat at this time. They are mashed potato,
cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

Mexican people traditionally celebrate Christmas

for twelve days – from Christmas evening on
December 24th, to the Three Kings Day on January
6th. The Three Kings Day finishes all these
celebrations. This holiday was inspired by the
biblical story of the three kings from the East, who
saw a bright star in the sky the night Jesus was
born, and came to see baby Jesus. This holiday is
so important for Mexicans that they often give
additional gifts on this day, even though it is shortly
after Christmas.
Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday in
China. It happens on the last day of the last
month of the Chinese calendar, which does
not match with December 31st, but instead
falls between January 21st and February 20th.
The celebrations normally last for two weeks.
During the celebrations, you can see beautiful
decorations such as dragons, lanterns, flowers,
as well as fireworks and people wearing
traditional Chinese clothing.

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated all over the

world on March 17th, but it came from Ireland. It
has both a cultural and a religious meaning, since
it is named after Saint Patrick, the patron saint
of Ireland. People celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in
more countries than any other national holiday.
There is a public parade, with many visitors
wearing green clothes, since this colour is the
symbol of Ireland.
