Concept: Effectiveness of Online Class to the Intellectual Development in Marine Engineering

The adoption of online learning is advantageous during any pandemic like COVID-19 fulfilling the
educational needs of students staying at home. It also has been revealed that online learning is really
helpful in advancing the overall language skills of English language learners. The participants considered
the unavailability of the online learning tools as an obstacle on the way to distance learning particularly
in remote areas, nonetheless, the overall inferences drew attention to the efficiency and effectiveness of
the online learning system. Despite all the advantages, online learning can never be the replacement of
traditional learning due to certain limitations of the online learning system. However, it has finally been
concluded that an online learning system is the best substitute for conventional learning systems during
any pandemic situation like COVID-19 (Hussain I., et al, 2020).

In the Philippines, study revealed that 7 out of 10 among the maritime students were not ready
to cope with the sudden change or new way of learning on the basis of not having a computer of their
own for school purposes; weak internet connectivity at home; no access to internet shops; and personal
wellbeing. Almost 3 out of 5 of maritime students preferred face-to-face learning. The author’s
conclusions are that the impact of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic in the educational systems
across the whole world did not exempt the maritime education in the Philippines. All the MHEIs
(Maritime Higher Education Institutions) in the country are in a difficult situation where their decision-
making skills are being tested to maintain quality maritime education amidst the outbreak of the
coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic (Ochavillo, G., 2020)

Although there have been a lot of existing studies regarding effectiveness of online class to the
intellectual development, no study has ever focused on the Marine Engineering Course as the
respondents of their study. The gap must be addressed to establish the intellectual development among
marine engineering students and to find out the effectiveness of online class on the intellectual
development among the maritime students. The researchers chose the study because effectiveness of
online class is concern on what are the hindrance on intellectual development of the students. The issue
concerning the effects of online class on intellectual development is one of the things that the
researchers want to settle.Furthermore through the Educational Institution, the researcher suggest for
the schools to strengthen their online or virtual class capabilities in order to be more accessible to the
students.
