UNIT 1
1 Identity
This syllabus item provides practice of the kind of language we use to talk about past habits and
wishes. It also provides practice of agreeing and disagreeing.
Vocabulary Looking at a list of phrases and deciding which ones are phrases for disagreeing.
Identifying polite phrases for disagreeing with people.
Grammar Checking your knowledge of 'would' and 'used to' to talk about past habits and
states. Checking your knowledge of how to use 'would' to talk about repeated actions
in the past.
Language Use Practicing 'used to' and the simple past. Practicing expressing regret with 'wish', 'if
only' and some conditional clauses.
Pronunciation Practicing the sounds /z/ and /s/ at the ends of words.
Listening Listening to a woman talking about her annoying co-worker. Listening to eight
different people being asked for their opinions about a proposal. Listening to two
interviews about people's working lives.
UNIT 2
2 Global Views
This syllabus item provides practice of the kind of language we use to talk about globalization. It
also provides practice of double comparatives and prepositions.
Grammar Checking your knowledge of stative verbs. Checking your knowledge of double
comparatives. Checking your knowledge of the structure 'the...the'.
Vocabulary Practicing collocations to complete short texts about globalization-related issues.
Listening Listening to an interview about life in the 1920s and selecting the statements that
match the speaker's opinions.
Language Use Practicing expressions commonly used to express your views and agree or disagree
with someone else's views. Practicing expressions used to give opinions. Practicing
word formation to complete an article about a current global trend - the brain drain.
Practicing recognition of the verbs that are not normally used in the progressive form.
Practicing connectors. Practicing words and phrases used to organize speaking and
writing.

This syllabus item provides practice of the kind of language we use to talk about regrets. It also
provides practice of the third/unreal conditional, noun clauses and suffixes.
UNIT 5
5 Water, Water, Everywhere
This syllabus item provides practice of the kind of language we use to talk about environmental
issues. It also provides practice of the passive and the infinitive of purpose.
Grammar Checking your knowledge of verbs that can have two objects. Checking your
knowledge of verbs followed by two objects. Checking your knowledge of '-ing' forms
after prepositions. Checking your knowledge of structures containing a verb followed
by a preposition and '-ing form' in academic English.
Vocabulary Practicing fixed phrases by selecting the correct words to complete a text about the
birds at the Tower of London.

UNIT 7
7 Designed to Please
This syllabus item provides practice of the kind of language we use to talk about design. It also
provides practice of gerunds and the past perfect.
Grammar Checking your knowledge of the use of the gerund. Checking your knowledge of '-ing'
forms to indicate purpose. Checking your knowledge of how to spell '-ing' endings
in the past perfect progressive. Checking your knowledge of the structure object +
'-ing' form. Checking your knowledge of the use of the past perfect and past perfect
progressive. Checking your knowledge of when to use the past perfect progressive.
Checking your knowledge of when to use the past perfect.
Language Use Practicing verb forms and reading comprehension by reading an article about people's
ability to recognize companies' logos and brands, then deciding whether various verbs
in the text should be in the infinitive or the '-ing' form.
Listening Listening to a boss of a graphic design studio asking an employee to redesign a
company logo. Listening to a journalist from a men's fashion magazine, CHAPS,
stopping four men in the street and asking them about their self-image.
UNIT 8
8 Justice for All?
This syllabus item provides practice of the kind of language we use to talk about social problems. It
also provides practice of quantifiers.
Language Use Practicing 'so' and 'enough' and 'so/too' followed by 'much/many', 'little' and 'a
few'. Practicing quantifiers. Practicing a variety of quantifiers. Practicing quantifiers.
Practicing the use of determiners.
Pronunciation Contrasting two different dipthong sounds.
Listening Listening to a speaker talking about the life of Andy Warhol.

UNIT 9
9 The Weird and Wonderful World of Plants
This syllabus item provides practice of the kind of language we use to talk about the natural world.
It also provides practice of articles.
Language Use Practicing the use of articles. Practicing the use of 'a/an', 'the' and the zero article.
Practicing the use of the definite article 'the', and the zero article.
Pronunciation Identifying the changing syllable stress in nouns and their corresponding adjectives.
Listening Listening to facts about corals.
Grammar Checking your knowledge of the zero article. Checking your knowledge of the definite
article. Checking your knowledge of the indefinite article. Checking your knowledge of
articles. Checking your knowledge of 'wh-' words + compounds with 'ever'.
UNIT 10
10 Risky Business
This syllabus item provides practice of the kind of language we use to talk about ability and
deduction. It also provides practice of modals.
Language Use Practicing the modal verb 'can/can't for ability. Practicing modals of ability: 'can',
'could', 'be able to'. Practicing modals of deduction 'must ' and 'can't', and of
possibility 'might' and 'could'. Practicing the use of modal verbs.
Listening Listening to a professor talking about the benefits of biofuels and identifying the key
points that are missing from the explanation.
Grammar Checking your knowledge of how to use 'could' to talk about ability in the past.
Checking your knowledge of talking about ability in the past. Checking your
knowledge of using 'must' and 'can't' to talk about things you are certain of and to
make deductions. Checking your knowledge of how to use 'have got to' and 'have to'
to make deductions.
