AVT 4233: AVIONICS MAINTENANCE SYSTEM MANAGEMENT

MIDTERM QUIZ

SADJE, SEAN DUSTIN

BSAET 4-5

I. ESSAY.(10 pts. each)

Why should we conduct aircraft maintenance?

We must perform aviation maintenance since it ensures the efficient and effective
operation of your aircraft. There may be a chance of flight delays or cancellations if your
engine is not functioning properly. If your passengers are on a plane that has been damaged
in an accident or other disaster, they may also be in danger. Additionally, frequent flying
will help to guarantee that your aircraft are constantly in top condition, enabling you to
reach your destination as quickly as possible.

2. What is an Entropy?
The capacity of a system to switch between states is known as entropy. Entropy is a
term used in aviation maintenance to explain how an aircraft starts to break down over
time. Entropy is a metric for how turbulent a system is. As it gets older and is exposed to
more environmental conditions, like temperature extremes and humidity changes, it has an
impact on engines, planes, and other systems.

3. Define the context of “A Saw Blade has width”.

The context in which this saying is used is most likely used when someone is doing
something wrong or they are being blamed for something they didn't do. My guess is that if
you asked someone n a younger age what their parents taught them to say after saying "A
saw blade has width," they would probably answer with some version of "I don't know.”

4. What are the roles of an Aircraft Engineer?

An aircraft is designed, tested, and maintained by an aircraft engineer. Designers will
concentrate on jet engines and other mechanical systems in addition to creating traditional
airplanes. An aircraft engineer's responsibilities extend beyond the project's design phase to
include aircraft maintenance. Inspection, repair, and maintenance of aircraft parts are all
part of the maintenance phase. Other duties include keeping track of maintenance activities
and giving customers technical information on how to maintain their aircraft. In addition to
making sure that seasoned engineers are adequately taught for their work tasks, an aircraft
engineer also provides training for new engineers or those who want to enter the
profession.

5. Give at least two limitations faced by an Engineer from making the perfect design.
The time needed to create a prototype is the first obstacle an aviation engineer must
overcome in order to create the ideal design. Designing takes a lot of time and money, and
testing prototypes takes longer if there are many of them. Cost is the second challenge an
airplane engineer must overcome to create the ideal design. Making and testing new ideas
is quite expensive. Before beginning their projects, aircraft engineers must make sure they
have the required funds available because they will not be able to even begin.

6. What is the role of an aircraft mechanic in battling entropy?

In order for an airplane to fly safely and effectively, aircraft mechanics work to keep it
in a stable state. They manage this by maintaining their aircraft to keep it safe to fly and
making sure it stays in good shape. By addressing any issues with the aircraft before they
become hazardous or fatal, they also contribute to the safety of the passengers while they
are on board.

7. What is a preventive maintenance?

Preventive maintenance is a systematic procedure carried out on a device or system to
guarantee its continuing performance and dependability. Your phone, computer, or vehicle
should all receive regular, preventative maintenance. Preventive maintenance puts you in
good standing with your vehicle's manufacturer, saves you time, and guards against
expensive repairs.
A preventive maintenance in an aircraft is an inspection, testing or other procedure
performed to detect problems with a machine before they occur. It is the first step in
maintaining a machine. A preventive maintenance program ensures that the aircraft will
continue to function properly throughout its operational life, thus minimizing the need for
costly repairs and down time. Preventive maintenance improves the reliability of an
aircraft. It also improves customer satisfaction by ensuring that the aircraft is available
when needed, which can lead to reduced costs and improved passenger experience.

8. What is an unscheduled maintenance?

An unscheduled maintenance is an aircraft maintenance procedure carried out in the
absence of any maintenance schedule. Unscheduled maintenance can be carried out on any
type of aircraft. It is usually done to correct a problem or to maintain an aircraft in
accordance with its approved flight manual or airworthiness requirements. An unscheduled
maintenance may also be referred to as an unplanned repair or an emergency repair.

9. What is aircraft system reliability?

Aircraft system reliability is the ability of an aircraft system to operate in accordance
with its design, without breakdowns and malfunctions. Reliability is a measure of the
ability of a system to perform without failure or malfunction for a specified period of time.
Reliability is determined by examining all components involved in an aircraft's
operation, including engine, airframe, avionics, landing gear and brakes — everything. If a
component fails during flight, it could cause an unexpected landing or even cause an
accident; therefore it's important to understand how each part of an aircraft works together
so that you can prevent problems before they happen.

10. What is Redesign and its importance?

Redesign is the process of changing an existing product, service or system to make it
better. It is a process which involves redesigning the product or service so that it can be
made available at a lower cost while maintaining or improving its efficacy and efficiency.
Redesign involves making changes in the manufacturing processes and the product design
to reduce costs, improve quality and increase marketability.

Redesign can be applied to any industry such as aviation, transportation and logistics
etc. In aviation sector, there are many types of redesigns which include; re-designing
aircraft’s fuselage, re-designing aircraft engines, re-designing avionics systems and much
more.
