Correlation Analysis

A school instructor is interested in measuring the potential connection between grade

point average (GPA) and IQ scores among ninth graders. The teacher takes a random sample of

30 ninth graders aged 14 years old and administers the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children

Fourth Edition (WICS IV). For this evaluation, the instructor developed a null hypothesis that

stipulates the connection between IQ scores and GPA.

H: There exists a positive correlation between IQ scores and GPA of the ninth graders aged 14

years old.

HO: There exists a weak positive or negative correlation between IQ scores and GPA of the

ninth graders aged 14 years old.

Through the formation of the hypothesis, the researcher was concentrating on two key

variables; IQ scores and GPA. The IQ score was the independent variable while the GPA was the

dependent variable, and their dependence will be measured through an accurate interval scale

(Zhuang et al., 2020). The scale of measurement is a quantitative measurement where intervals

between categories are known; zero is agreed upon but not absolute, the scale offers for

mathematical manipulation. A student with a GPA of zero would mean they have demonstrated

achievement in a specific category.

The findings indicated that the total sample included 40 ninth-graders; with an average

91.7 IQ score and 2.85 GPA. Also, when the SPSS analysis was performed to measure the

correlation between the frequencies of GPA and IQ scores, the significance was 0.000 while the

Pearson correlation is 0.608. The significance value is determined by the p-value, with a

significance level of 00.00001. As 0.000 is greater than 0.001; therefore, there is a great

significance between the variables.

Additionally, to check the correlation between the variables, the G graph evaluation had

been completed and the analysis indicated a positive correlation between the variables. The

correlation is significant because there was an upward trend for both variables. Since the scatter

plot indicates an upward trend, there is a positive correlation between ninth-grade learners’ IQ

and GPA. Hence, the overall analysis of the study shows that not only is there a positive

relationship but also it is a very strong relationship.

However, the strength of the association is moderate, as the data was dispersed and

indicated a 0.7 Pearson correlation. Hence, the correlation between 0.7-0.9 is moderate.

Nonetheless, the findings are useful to support the hypothesis of the study, which states that there

is a positive correlation between IQ scores and GPA of the ninth graders aged 14 years old.

In a nutshell, the study was performed to test the correlation between the IQ score and

GPA of the ninth graders; aged 14 years. The sample size was based on the 4 participants, the

result of which indicated a moderate correlation between variables. I simply suggest that the

students with a better IQ level can have better performance in academic exams., and therefore

can obtain a better GPA than the students with a low IQ level. The findings are important for

educators to better analyze how to enhance learners’ IQ levels to obtain better academic

performance.
