Basic Terms
• A group of numbers which are arranged in a definite order following a certain rule is called
a sequence.
• Example:

• When the numbers (terms) in a sequence are connected to each other by plus sign or
minus sign, the sequence becomes series.
• Example: 2 + 6 + 10 + 14, … or
• −2 − 6 − 10 − 14 …

A.P
• When the elements of a series or sequence
are written in a definite order following certain
rule, we get a progression.
• Arithmetic Progression (A.P)
An arithmetic progression is a sequence(series)
of numbers in which each term can be obtained
by adding a certain quantity to its preceding
term.
Examples: 2, 5, 8, 11…..
-3, 0, 3, 6, 9 ….

• General form an Arithmetic Progression:
Let the first term of an A.P be ‘a’ and its common difference be ‘d’, the terms of the
A.P can be taken as : 𝑎, 𝑎 + 𝑑, 𝑎 + 2𝑑, 𝑎 + 3𝑑 …
First term = 𝑡1 = 𝑎 + 1 − 1 𝑑 = 𝑎
Second term = 𝑡2 = 𝑎 + 2 − 1 𝑑 = 𝑎 + 𝑑
Third term = 𝑡3 = 𝑎 + 3 − 1 𝑑 = 𝑎 + 2𝑑, and so on
• 𝑛𝑡ℎ term of an A.P, t n = 𝑎 + 𝑛 − 1 𝑑
• Last term of an A.P , 𝑙 = 𝑎 + 𝑛 − 1 𝑑
• Common difference , 𝑑 = 𝑡2 − 𝑡1 or 𝑡3 − 𝑡2 and so on
If 𝑑 > 0, A.P is increasing,
If 𝑑 < 0, A.P is decreasing and
if 𝑑 = 0, all the terms of the A.P are same.

Problems
• (1) Check whether the following sequences are in A.P.
1 1 1 1
(i) , , , , …, (ii) 15, 12, 9, 6 …
2 3 4 5
1 1
Solution: Difference of first term from second term = −
3 2
2−3 −1
𝑑 = =
6 6
1 1
Difference of third term from second = −
4 3
3−4 −1
d= =
12 12
Since the common difference is not the same for both the cases, the given
sequence is not in A.P.
(ii) 𝑑 = 12 − 15 = −3 and 𝑑 = 6 − 9 = −3
Since the common difference is the same, given series is an A.P.

General form of A.P is 𝑎, 𝑎 + 𝑑, 𝑎 + 2𝑑, …
𝑎 = 12 , 𝑑 = 10 − 12 = −2, n = 24
𝑛𝑡ℎ 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 = 𝑡𝑛 = 𝑎 + 𝑛 − 1 𝑑
𝑡24 = 𝑎 + 24 − 1 𝑑
= 12 + 23 × −2 = 12 − 46

Solution: Given A.P is 3, 2 3, 3 3………
𝑎 = 3, 𝑑 =2 3− 3= 3, 𝑛 = 100
𝑡𝑛 = 𝑎 + 𝑛 − 1 𝑑
Friday, January 29, 2021 TUNBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL, Bangalore 6
• 𝑡100 = 𝑎 + 100 − 1 𝑑
= 3 + 99 3
= 100 3
• (4) Is 402 a term of the sequence 8, 13, 18, 23 , ……………….?
Solution: Let 𝑛𝑡ℎ term of the given sequence be 402
𝑡𝑛 = 402 , 𝑎 = 8, 𝑑 = 13 − 8 = 5
𝑎 + 𝑛 − 1 𝑑 = 402
8 + 𝑛 − 1 5 = 402
8 + 5𝑛 − 5 = 402
3 + 5𝑛 = 402
399
5𝑛 = 402 − 3 = 399 , => 𝑛= ,
5
Number of terms, 𝑛 can not be in fractions, so 402 is not a term of the given sequence.
