Learning Task 3 (Week 1)

An arithmetic sequence is a sequence where each succeeding term is obtained by adding a
fixed number. The fixed number is called the common difference.
10, 13, 16, 19,… - is an example of arithmetic sequence, the next term can be obtained by
adding 3. Therefore, the common difference is 3. The next three terms are 22, 25, 28
2, 6, 18, 54… - is NOT an example of arithmetic sequence, there is no common difference.
6, 11, 16, 21,… - is an example of arithmetic sequence, the next term can be obtained by
adding 5. Therefore, the common difference is 5. The next three terms are 26, 31, 36

To find the next terms in an arithmetic sequence, we use the formula:

. 𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 + ( 𝒏 − 𝟏 ) 𝒅
where; 𝑎𝑛 – the last nth term
𝑎1 – the first term
n – the number of terms in the sequence
Determine the 12th term in the sequence 4, 6, 8, 10, ...
The first element: 𝑎1 = 4. The common difference: d = 2. The term: n = 12.
𝑎12 = 4 + (12 – 1)2
𝑎12 = 4 + (11)2
𝑎12 = 4 + 22
𝑎12 = 26
Therefore, 26 is the 12th term of the arithmetic sequence.

Answer the following:

A. Determine whether the sequence is arithmetic or not. If it is, find the common difference and the next
three terms.
1. 2, 5, 8, 11,… 4. 40, 42, 44, 46,…
2. 2, -4, 6, -8, 10,… 5. 1.2, 1.8, 2.4,…
3. -6, -10, -14, -18,… 6. 1, 5, 9, 13,…
B. Find the term indicated in each of the following arithmetic sequences.
1. 2, 4, 6, … 15th term _______
2. 13, 16, 19, 22, … 25th term _______
3. 99, 88, 77, 66, … 18th term_______
1 1 3 1
4. 8, 4, 8 , 2 20th term _______
5. 99, 87, 75, 63, … 12th term _______

Learning Task 4 (Week 1)

The terms between any two nonconsecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence are known as
arithmetic means.
Find two arithmetic means between 2 and 8. (Use the same formula)
𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 + ( 𝒏 − 𝟏 ) 𝒅
8 = 2 + (4 – 1) d - Substitute, 𝒂𝒏 = 𝟖, 𝒂𝟏 = 𝟐, d=?, n = 4 (four terms including the arithmetic means)
8 = 2 + 3d
8 – 2 = 3d
6 = 3d
3 3
d=2
Using d = 2, generate the next terms by adding the value of “d” to the previous term.
So a2 = a1 + d and a3 = a2 + d which means a2 = 2 + 2 = 4 and a3 = 4 + 2 = 6.
2, 2+2, 4+2, 8
2, 4, 6, 8
The numbers 4 and 6 are the two arithmetic means between 2 and 8.

Answer the following:

Solve what is asked:
1. Insert four arithmetic means between -1 and 14.
2. Insert five arithmetic means between 14 and 86.
3. Insert three arithmetic means between -16 and 4.

sequences? Explain.
3. What are the differences between an arithmetic sequence and a geometric sequence?

LEARNING TASK 4 (Week 2)

Geometric means are terms between two nonconsecutive terms of a geometric sequence.

Example: Determine the geometric mean between 6 and 54.

Solution 1: Use the geometric sequence formula to determine the common ratio 𝑟. Then, multiply the
result to the first term.
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 ∙ 𝑟 𝑛−1
54 = 6 ∙ 𝑟 3−1
54 = 6 ∙ 𝑟 2
54
= 𝑟2
6
9 = 𝑟2
√9 = 𝑟
±3 = 𝑟
If 𝑟 = ±3, then the geometric mean between 6 and 54 is ±𝟏𝟖 since 6 ∙ 3 = 18 and 6 ∙ −3 = −18.

Solution 2: Use the formula 𝑎2 = √𝑎1 ∙ 𝑎𝑛 to directly determine the geometric mean between two terms.

Given: 6, _____, 54
𝑎1 𝑎𝑛

𝑎2 = √𝑎1 ∙ 𝑎𝑛 = √6 ∙ 54 = √324 = ±𝟏𝟖

TASK: Determine the geometric mean of each geometric sequence.

Learning Task 3 (Week 3)

Examples on how to divide polynomials
Given: Divide (𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 + 10𝑥 + 3) by (𝑥 + 3)

Using Long division

1. Arrange the terms of the dividend and divisor in decreasing powers. If there are missing terms, write them with a
coefficient of zero.
𝒙 + 3√𝐱 𝟑 + 6x 2 + 10x + 3

2. Divide the first term of the dividend by the first term of the divisor to get the first term of the quotient.
x2
𝒙 + 3√𝐱 𝟑 + 6x 2 + 10x + 3

3. Multiply the result in step 2 by the divisor.

x2
𝑥 + 3√x 3 + 6x 2 + 10x + 3
x 3 + 3x 2

4. Subtract the result from step 3. Bring down the next term of the dividend.
x2
𝑥 + 3√x 3 + 6x 2 + 10x + 3
x 3 + 3x 2
3x 2 + 10𝑥

5. Repeat the entire process using the result in step 4 as the new dividend.

𝐱 𝟐 + 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏
𝑥 + 3√x 3 + 6x 2 + 10x + 3
x 3 + 3x 2
3x 2 + 10𝑥
3x 2 + 9𝑥
𝑥+3
𝑥+3
0
6. Express the result as:
dividend = quotient + remainder
divisor divisor
Using synthetic division - Given: Divide (𝑥 3 + 6𝑥 2 + 10𝑥 + 3) by (𝑥 + 3)

1. Write the numerical coefficients in one row. If there is a missing term, write 0 to represent that missing term. Write
the test zero at the left. We are dividing by x + 3 so the test zero is x = -3

test zero

2. Carry down the first number, multiply by test zero and add to the second column. 1 x -3 = -3

3. Add down the column. Now, multiply the sum in the second column (that is, 3) by the test zero. Thus 3(-3) = -9

4. Write the product -9 on the third column then add. Repeat the steps for the next column. Multiply 1 by the test
zero, add the result to the next column.

5. Repeat the steps for the next column. Multiply -3 by the test zero, add the result to the next column until you
reach the last column

The third row that we obtained represents the numerical coefficients of the terms of the quotient. The degree to be
used is one less than the degree of the dividend. The right most number is the remainder.
The highest degree of the dividend is
3, subtract it by one to get the degree
of the quotient.
Numerical coefficients of the terms of quotient 3-1=2

ANSWER

Answer the following:

Divide each of the following: using the two methods.
1. (𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 + 10) ÷ (𝑥 − 5)
2. (𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 20) ÷ (𝑥 − 4)
3. (𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 + 3) ÷ (𝑥 + 1)
4. (2𝑥 3 − 18𝑥 − 45 + 5𝑥 2 ) ÷ (𝑥 + 5)
5. (3𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 3 + 11𝑥 − 4) ÷ (𝑥 + 2)

Learning Task 4 (Week 3)

Remainder Theorem
Example: Find the remainder of the given
𝑃(𝑥) = (2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 1) ÷ (𝑥 − 3)

Solution: 𝑃(𝑥) = (2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 1); (𝑥 = 3) (we are dividing x-3, therefore the test of zero is 3.
𝑃(3) = 2(3)2 − 5(3) – 1 (substitute 3 for x)
𝑃(3) = 2 (9) − 15 – 1
𝑃(3) = 18 − 15 – 1
𝑃(3) = 3– 1
𝑃(3) = 2
Therefore, the remainder when you divide (2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 − 1) by (𝑥 − 3) is 2.
Factor Theorem
Example 1: Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether the first polynomial is a factor the second.
(𝑥 − 1); (3𝑥 3 − 8𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 2)

To determine whether (𝑥 − 1) is a factor of 𝑃(𝑥) = (3𝑥 3 − 8𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 2), use the remainder theorem to find
the remainder.
Solution: 𝑃(𝑥) = (3𝑥 3 − 8𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 2); (𝑥 − 1) we are dividing x-1, therefore the test of zero is 1.
𝑃(1) = 3(1)3 − 8(1)2 + 3(1) + 2 (substitute 3 for x)
𝑃(1) = 3(1) − (8) + 3 + 2
𝑃(1) = 3 − 8 + 3 + 2
𝑃(1) = −5 + 3 + 2
𝑃(1) = −2 + 2
𝑃(1) = 0
Since 𝑃(1) = 0, therefore (𝑥 − 1) is a factor of 𝑃(𝑥) = (3𝑥 3 − 8𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 2)

Example 2: Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether the first polynomial is a factor the second.
(𝑥 + 5); (𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 7)

Solution: 𝑃(𝑥) = (𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 7); (𝑥 + 5) we are dividing x+5 , therefore the test of zero is -5.
𝑃(−5) = (−5)2 − 3(−5) + 7 (substitute -5 for x)
𝑃(−5) = 25 − (−15) + 7
𝑃(−5) = 40 + 7
𝑃(−5) = 47
Since 𝑃(−5) = 47, therefore (𝑥 + 5) is not a factor of 𝑃(𝑥) = (𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 7)

Answer the following:

A. Use the Remainder Theorem to find the remainder R in each of the following given.
1. 𝑃(𝑥) = (𝑥 4 − 𝑥 3 + 2) ÷ (𝑥 + 2)
2. 𝑃(𝑥) = (𝑥 3 − 2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 6) ÷ (𝑥 − 3)
3. 𝑃(𝑥) = (𝑥 4 − 3𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 4) ÷ (𝑥 − 2)

B. Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether or not the first polynomial is a factor of the second.
1. (𝑥 − 1); (𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 5)
2. (𝑥 + 1); (𝑥 3 − 𝑥 − 2)
3. (𝑥 − 4); (2𝑥 3 − 9𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 − 20)
