Many teachers assign homework to students every day. Do you
think that daily homework is necessary for students? Use specific
reasons and details to support your answer.

Students all over the world are surrounded with information every day, some
of which remains unused or analyzed after the regular school day. In this situation,
daily homework represents a tool that teachers should use in case they want their
students to succeed in academic life.

In the first place, students can remember the things they learned in class
through activities and exercises outside the classroom. Interactive activities or
traditional exercises are able to test students’ knowledge after they learned new
concepts, something that strengthens their ability to use previous ideas for solving
specific problems. Additionally, it clears the way for students to learn more things the
following day, since recent knowledge is stored in their brain more precisely. A clear
example of this can be seen on history classes, where past historical events take
place relatively close and are consequential to each other.

On the other hand, daily homework allows students to repeat and use
everything they learned on class one more time. In other words, students would be
using their short-term memory for specific information, improving their memory span
and reinforcing long-term use of data. For instance, math and science classes are
full of specific words only used in those subjects and learned by memory. In cases
like this, daily homework represents an excellent alternative to traditional repetition
exercises where the main goal is memory and not overall understanding.

Furthermore, homework done daily help students avoid cramming before a

test. Research has shown that the brain reacts better to activities carried
progressively in a stablished amount than those completed in a rush. Therefore,
students get higher grades when they do daily homework before a test, rather than
those who decide to study all content one day before.

In conclusion, daily homework should be a norm for students since it helps

them to keep fresh previous knowledge, improves short and long term memory, and
prevent students from reviewing an overload of information before a test.
