ABSTRACT

The primary purpose of this research is to trace the history of Silway-8 National High

School, the focus in particular would be from the time it started as an annex school

to becoming a mega school in the South Cotabato Division. Using a historical method

of qualitative research perspective, this research delineates the humble beginning of

the school, the stepping forward to milestone with its breakthrough and innovation

and facing challenges to achieving rewards. Data were collected, examined, analyzed

and then organized by date, events and the person in-charge.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

History is life. It is the academic discipline which uses narrative to describe,

examine, question and analyze a sequence of past events, and investigate the

patterns of cause and effect that are related to them (Evans, 2001). All events that

are remembered and preserved constitute the historical record. From the beginning,

historians have also used such sources as monuments, inscriptions and pictures. In

general, the sources of historical knowledge can be separated into three categories:

what is written, what is said and what is physically preserved (Lemon, 1995). The

past is a source of experience. Through a historical research, one can have a clear

records of the history. The researcher choose to do this research paper because of

the desire to know the past of Silway-8 National High School. From the humble

beginning as an annex school to becoming a mega school in South Cotabato Division.

Silway-8 National High School is a public secondary educational institution

situated at the Municipality of Polomolok, South Cotabato under the Division of

South Cotabato. The inspiration for Silway-8 National High School came in the

initiative of Barangay Captain Lorenzo P. Gumbao Sr., with the help of Ma’am

Veronica Jumalon of Silway-8 ES, Miss Rina Jumalon, and Miss Elvira Gumalo, who

contributed the first founding steps of Silway-8 National High School.

By June 16, 1986, a school was born at Brgy. Silway-8, Polomolok, South

Cotabato, when Mrs. Elena A. Abedin, school administrator of Bentung-Sulit High

School accepted the proposal to allow Silway-8 NHS to become an annex school.

Started only with 106 enrolees.

The school continued to expand as years goes by, new teachers were hired

due to the increase of enrolees and different OIC’s were designated in the school.

Until, finally in year 2000, the school was officially named as SILWAY-8 NATIONAL

HIGH SCHOOL.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to provide a temporal and contextual meaning of Silway-8

National High School.

Specifically, this research is to delineate the following:

1. The humble beginning of the school.

2. The stepping forward to milestone.

3. Breakthrough and innovation.

4. Challenges and reward.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Qualitative research offers an opportunity for in-depth examination of

information. Conducting qualitative research primarily focuses on data generation

and much less on the procedures for analysing the data (Polkinghorne, 1995).

Historical research, sometimes referred to as historiography, means according to

Berg (2012) investigation of elements from history. It is specific type of scientific

research work. According to Hendl (2005) is one of the basic approaches of

qualitative research. Kerlinger (1972) defines historical research as critical

investigation of events, development and experiences in the past, careful

consideration of past testimonies from the perspective of information sources

validity and subsequent interpretation of the concerned testimonies. It differs from

other scientific activities only by the subject matter which is hard to capture – the

past – and especially by a difficult task of interpretation influenced by the nature of

the unique subject matter.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

Historical methods of research is the process of critical inquiry into

past events, in order to produce an accurate description and interpretation of

those events. The sources of historical information are commonly classified

as primary and secondary. ‘Primary sources are first-hand access of the

events or experience under study, secondary sources are account at least one

level removed from the event or experience’ (Wiersma, 1986). The historical

method of qualitative research design was used to carry out this research.
RESPONDENTS

The respondents of the research were the teachers who contributed

in the foundation of Silway-8 National High School.

INSTRUMENTS

The research instruments used in the study were documents /official

records available in the school and recorded notes during the personal

interview by the researcher.

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

Data were collected, examined, analyzed and then organized by date,

events and the person in-charge.

CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The school started as an Annex School of Bentung-Sulit High School (BSHS)

under the administration of Mrs. Elena A. Abedin, school administrator, with the

effort of barangay officials of Brgy. Silway-8 under the initiative of Barangay Captain

Lorenzo P. Gumbao Sr. and with the help of Mrs. Veronica Jumalon of Silway-8

Elementary School, the school started its operation on June 16, 1986, with the total

first year enrolees of 106 students. Miss Rina Jumalon, Miss Elvira Gamalo, Mrs.

Nancy Bacus and Mr. Nicando Escolano were among the first teachers hired in the

school. Mr. Romeo F. Calvo, the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Silway-8 Elementary

School, offered three (3) classrooms to be used tentatively by the newly created

school. Then, later on due to the increase of enrolees, new teachers were hired: Miss

Eva Solis, Miss Milagros Susvilla, Mrs. Norma M. Layagan, and Mrs. Gina Balbona. In

1987, during the celebration of teacher’s day Miss Eva Solis was crowned Mutya ng

mga Guro BSHS-Silway-8 Annex.

In School Year (SY) 1988-1989, Mrs. Milagros Susvilla- Escolano was

designated as the OIC of Bentung-Sulit High School Annex. Teachers were added in

the person of Mr. David Miranda, Mrs. Ivy C. Mino, Ms. Editha Latigo, Ms. Ardina

Salazar and Mrs. Elsie F. Mosquera.

In SY 1992-1993, Mrs. Eva Solis Cosep became OIC. The enrolment increased,

PMS and BOD buildings were constructed. It is when Mr. Ah M. Tan Jr., Mrs. Susan

G. Boligao, and Mrs. Minda M. Cuaresma joined the sodality of teachers.

In SY 1995-1997, Mrs. Mercedes D. Balais was given a national item; Mrs.

Murdy Bautista took the Provincial School Board item; Mrs. Rowena Flores and Mr.

Norberto Solis were hired as municipal-hired teachers.

In December 18, 1998, Mrs. Eva S. Cosep ended her position as OIC and was

promoted to Principal I at Polonuling National High School. Mrs. Ivy C. Mino then,

served as the next OIC until December of 2004. Sir Ah M. Tan Jr. got the item left by

Ma’am Eva S. Cosep.

In SY 1998-1999, Mr. Geroel Dagsan and Mrs. Angelina De Ramos were

welcomed in the school.

At the beginning of the year 1999-2000, physical facilities of the school

started to improved.

Finally, in 2000, the school was officially named as SILWAY-8 NATIONAL HIGH

SCHOOL.

In the 26th of July 2004, Mrs. Florencia Carmen was installed as the new

principal is Silway-8 National High School. Her helping hands paved the way for the

promotion of Mrs. Ivy C. Mino, Mr. Norberto Solis Jr. and Mrs. Norma Layagan for

Master Teacher extension positions.

Since its founding, the school has been constantly working on the

improvement of the quality of education the school is providing to its students.

Breakthrough and innovation had started in SY 2005-2006 as Ma’am Eva S. Cosep

assumed the responsibility left by former school head, Ma’am Carmen. Her

leadership made Silway-8 NHS a performing institution equally competent with other

big schools in the Division of South Cotabato. In November 2007, the land title of the
school was materialized, finally separated from Silway-8 Elementary School. Many

principals were appointed, the likes of Sir Benigno Toribio, Ma’am Alicia Villanueva,

who contributed to the accomplishments attained by the school.

Moreover, the school takes pride in being a back-to-back winner in Gender

and Development Division for the year 2013 and 2014, placing 1 st and 2nd

respectively. And also, being a Solid-Waste Management Hall of Famer which

manifests their commitment to solid waste management and environmental

protection. The school operates as a K-12 institution with various academic and

technical-vocational tracks. Under this program are academic strands in STEM, ABM,

GAS, and HUMSS.

From the year 2018 to present, the school is under the leadership of Mr. Roel

Peňaflorida, Principal I. There are already 88 teaching staffs, 1 school principal, 1

head teacher II, 1 ADAS 2, 1 ADAS 3, 2 utility clerk, and 3 security guards.

The school continues its excellence even to this day. It is recognized as a

mega school; awarded as Best Implementer for Brigada Eskwela (3 years in the

Division Level & 2 years in the Regional Level); and continues to develop outstanding

students in different fields of professions.

Table 1 shows the chronological order of the milestone that happen in

SIlway-8 National High School.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This research provided a temporal and contextual meaning of Silway-8

National High School. It utilized a qualitative, historical research approach that

delineates the humble beginning of the school, the stepping forward to milestone

with its breakthrough and innovation and facing challenges to achieving rewards. To

the best of my knowledge this is by far the first written compilation and analysis of

the history of Silway-8 National High School. If a reader should find discrepancies in

the data please contact the author. I hope that this research is viewed as a

contribution to school and that at some point in the future would be a reference to

further studies.
