SUMMARY OF OBSERVATIONS
The breathtaking extent of corruption and the hunger for power in Kenya has led many Kenyans to
believe that even when there is a National Prayer Breakfast aimed at bringing national leaders together
to meet, engage, interact, and pray for the country ahead of the 2022 general elections, it is filled with
hypocrisy, empty and meaningless prayers, and contempt towards other politicians. It is simply another
opportunity to spread their political agendas.
“The tragedy of our #NationalPrayerBreakfast is the hypocrisy; hollowness of the prayers. The Leaders
ask for forgiveness but today afternoon in their political rallies, go to default settings: ABUSES;
DISRESPECT”.
“Kenya's problem is not insufficient prayers but insufficient leadership we cannot pray our way out of
bad leadership and governance, even God has commandments because humans go, rogue, just like your
leaders went rogue on the constitution. #NationalPrayerBreakfast”
The main sentiment in the 2019 data is corruption from Kenyan leaders. Twitter users referred to
Kenyan leaders as looters and thieves who PREY on the weak to enrich themselves. Users’ say
“When looters and plunderers of a nation come together to pray for a nation that is bleeding. It is irony
that has never been seen before. #NationalPrayerBreakfast”
With regards to the 2022 National Prayer Breakfast data, the tweets suggest a degree of seriousness
towards the national prayers with only a few of tweets remarking on the quality of leadership in the
country. These tweets were generated because of a remark by aspiring president Deputy William Ruto
about being forgiven for not meeting the expectations of the president. Some users tweeted:
“None of us is perfect, We pray for God’s grace and strength to lead the nation to value based
leadership.
Let our prayers be matched by our actions as the Bible says.”
“Attended the National Prayer Breakfast, a 19yr old tradition to dedicate prayers to the nation of Kenya.
It is my prayer that, we as leaders, compete in ideas and not insults. This will lessen the tension in the
nation, by the way we treat one another.
#NationalPrayerBreakfast”
The overall statistics of the two datasets has changed. The 2019 National Prayer Breakfast had a high
volume of tweets compared to this year’s Prayer Breakfast. The difference is displayed below
