A Nation and its People Needs Freedom, Equality,

and a Good Leader: Corazon Aquino’s Fight Against Martial Law

I couldn't deny that I feel sad while reading the speech of our Former President of the
Philippines Corazon C. Aquino. It was kinda hurtful when she talked about her husband and how
her husband Senator Ninoy was three times lost from their family and the penalties that her
husband had encountered during that time under Pres. Ferdinand Marcos administration. It is a
very painful story that makes me sad for real and the punishment is so unrighteous and very
disgusting to read that they did that to Senator Ninoy.
However, President Cory didn't give up and wavered despite her loss and this part was so
amazing that she was even more determined to fight and bring back our country's democracy,
equality, and human rights when she said: "I was warned by the lawyers of the opposition, that I
ran the grave risk of legitimizing the foregone results of elections that were going to be
fraudulent. But I was not fighting for lawyers but for the people in whose intelligence, I had
implicit faith." When she said that it's indeed that she's fully dedicated and determined to run as a
president. Even though Marcos is very hard to defeat, but because of her faith in herself and the
people she continued and claim it.
Her bravery is very incomparable and because of that she successfully won the
presidential election and later on became the first female President of the Philippines. Moreover,
she succeeded in her analysis of the Martial Law era regarding its origin outcome. Marco's
attempt to stop a 500-strong communist insurgency by imposing restrictive policy only furthered
the Red Army's reach; in fact, it has been said that the Communist Party had 16,000 members by
the end of Martial Law, making Marcos the Party's biggest recruiter. President Cory said that
Martial Law was like, "trying to stifle a thing with the means by which it grows," acknowledging
the fact that the communist insurgency existed because of widespread economic inequality. She
called on America to help the Philippines in preserving the freedom which the Filipinos have
won for themselves. Calling to, “restore democracy by the ways of democracy,” she aggrandized
the role of America in the world as the promoter of a righteous system of governance and further
strengthened the reputation of the said country as a model for greatness.
In conclusion, I was very amazed, thankful that we had someone like Cory Aquino who
is very much determined, dedicated, brave, and also kind to save our country especially we
Filipinos to have equality, freedom, human rights, and brings back democracy in our country.
Her speech is one of the best speeches that I read and heard and for me, her overall speech just
wanted to say, A Nation and its People Needs Freedom, Equality, and a Good Leader.
