Foreword

This is not just a catalogue. It is what you have always looked for - a selection guide to choose the
construction you need for your project, your plant, your application ....

... CREATED TO PROVIDE YOUR CABLE SOLUTION

The European Standard EN 50288-7 is the first Standard for Instrumentation and Control Cables
which addresses the whole range of requirements and needs of general and specific industrial cable
applications.

Contrary to already existing official regulations and specifications, the new standard covers a huge
variety of cable constructions as used today in the international scene for global business. A meaningful,
comprehensive - but still standardised - offering on different material and construction variations allows
you to select cable constructions, which are part of the Standard but still are covering the necessity of
the application.

The new standard will be complemented by European Standards for Material and Test. As yet these
standards do not exist, so reference is made either to IEC Standards or national standards.

Based on many years of experience in international business, being project oriented or based on
customer site requirements, using the new European standard as a solid base, we have defined a very
wide product range with the intention to cover your field driven product requirements.

We selected and designed a product programme with the goal in mind to cover all usual applications.
Environmental, electrical, mechanical, laying and safety requirements result in a substantial product
family offering. This first section covers all product family related information. Specific type information
will be provided on request or through other media.

A very systematic organisation of this product family guide, allows you to select your product according
to your application and needs in a very efficient manner.

1.Introduction of Standards and Product Programme

1.1 The Standards

The product programme „Instrumentation Cable ICON™“ covers products which are based on the new European
standard EN 50288-7 and the US-American standards UL 13, UL 2250 and UL 1277.

This product programme gives extensive coverage to the requirements of the different Installation and Safety
Regulations which are applied for measurement, control and monitoring systems in industrial plants. As a result
the user has a product programme at his disposal for applications world wide.

1.1.1 EN 50288-7

The European standard EN 50288-7 represents the first standard for instrumentation cables for onshore
applications which has been created by a recognised international standardisation organisation.

Of special importance is the fact, that this standard more or less completely describes and regulates the wide
range of constructive elements and requirements of instrumentation cables used today.

This standard enables the user to convert all systems, security, environmental and installation demands to
appropriate products with wanted characteristics.

The standard is supplemented by well suited material and test standards, either EN- or IEC-based, which allows
to specify needed products in a conclusive manner.

The future meaning of this standard will be underlined by the fact that it will also become national standard in all
CENELEC attached countries (at present 28). National standards conflicting with the EN-Standard will have to be
withdrawn after a transitional period.

Furthermore the application of this standard means fulfilling the requirements of the “European Low Voltage
Directive”.

1.1.2 UL 13, UL 2250 and UL 1277

Instrumentation, Control and Thermocouple extension cables according to above standards have to be applied in
those systems, where „Installation and Safety regulations“ are based on the „National Electrical Code“ (NEC).

The NEC Handbook is published by the „National Fire Protection Association“ a leading US standardisation for
safety, particularly for fire protection. Its as installation guide is mandatory in the USA, however, it is also practised
in some other countries.

Instrumentation, Control and Thermocouple extension cables will thereby meet the following standards and
types:

⇒ 300 V “Power Limited Tray Cable” (PLTC) acc. to UL 13

“Instrumentation Tray Cable (ITC) acc. to UL 2250

⇒ 600 V “Tray Cable” (TC) acc. to UL 1277

1.2 The Product Programme

In all Standards mentioned above no finished products are specified; the standards describe „only“ the individual
cable elements, the constructional possibilities, specify materials, dimensions and test requirements with normative
references.

Supported by experiences of many years in the international project business KERPEN defined its product
programme ICON™ covering two parts:

„Standard Types“ and „Customised Types“

1.2.1 „Standard Types“

The part „Standard Types“ contains a comprehensive product offer suited to the usual market demands. It
describes thousands of products in detail and appeals particularly to those users who are responsible for product
specifications for world wide applications.

1.2.2 „Customised Types“

The part „Customised Types“ gives an overview of the alternatives and possibilities in designs that the standards
allow.

For each cable element different possible technical solutions are listed (see page F2).

Appropriate products can be offered on request.

1.3 Structural Overview

Standard Types Customised Types

2. Presentation of the Product Programme

2.1 Introduction

This catalogue has been created to be used as a product guide.

Systematically structured, put into condensed form, more than ten thousand different products are
described on the following pages (Standard Types, see part B - F).

This product programme is completed by listing the design alternatives and solutions for special
requirements (Customised Types, see part G).

So, this catalogue

supports ⇒ an easy to read overview of the listed product-programme

offers ⇒ product information with all relevant data
allows ⇒ a fast and best possible selection of the product to use

In this way this catalogue combines

⇒ clarity
⇒ completeness and
⇒ information demand

in an ideal manner.

2.2 Way of presentation

The description of the product programme is divided into the 2 parts:

⇒ Products acc. to EN 50288-7, Main Groups 1-3

⇒ Products acc. to UL 13/2250 and UL 1277, Main Groups 4 and 5

2.2.1 The Product groups

2.2.1.1 Main Groups

The EN as well as the UL-based product programme are arranged into 3 main product groups:

 Instrumentation Cables Cabling elements: pair and triple

 (Instrumentation) Control Cables Cabling element: core

 Thermocouple Extension & Compensating Cables Cabling elements: pair

Pairs and triples may be with or without individual screen.

A8  KERPEN GmbH & Co. KG • 05.2005 • Printing errors excepted. Subject to alteration
2.2.1.2 Sub Groups

For cables following the EN 50288-7 each of the above mentioned main group is divided into the
subsequent sub-groups:

 Common Types (PVC-sheathed)

 Halogen-free, flame retardant Types (LSZH-sheathed)

 Fire-resisting, flame retardant Types (LSZH-sheathed)

Each sub-group describes different product-families, each containing unarmoured and armoured products,
additionally armoured versions with chemical protection (lead sheath and multi-layer sheath) for the
group “Common types”. Product-family stands for a specific insulation material which offers choices for
optimising electrical, thermic or other relevant product properties.

The product programme following the UL-Standards is tailor-made for the requirements of the Installation-
and safety guidelines acc. to the National Electric Code (NEC).

Therefore, it doesn’t contain for example lead and multi-layer sheathed types, no halogen-free, flame-
retardant types and no fire-resisting types.

2.2.1.3 Presentation of Product Data

The product data are presented in three sections

 Technical data consist of information on application range, laying, bending

radius, temperature limitations, flame behaviour,
specific properties of outer sheath

 Construction describes the design of the cables

 Electrical data contains information on electrical properties of the described products.

The above listed product programme covers in a large extent the most popular instrumentation cables which
are nowadays used especially in the petrochemical industry.
But, nevertheless, depending on many reasons sometimes cables of alternative construction and dimensions,
cables with special properties, are requested.
Therefore, below an overview of the given construction possibilities, which can be offered. Resulting products
are either fully in accordance with the European standard and/or with the US-Standards.

Cable elements Constructions possibilities

 Conductor: plain or metal coated
solid, stranded or flexible (Class 1, 2 or 5)
