The English Teacher in 21st Century

Is the traditional learning method affect the student’s learning in the 21st century?
Many people think that it might affect the teachers and students in many ways, for example, it
cannot respond to the needs of students, and it cannot make students succeed in their life as
expected. Nowadays, learning in the 21st century also has entered into a role to help teachers
develop students more effectively, and it also is a good thing for students in their lifelong
learning. With the globalization of the world, English teachers also are the essential power to
make students succeed in learning in the 21st century. English teachers should improve and
prepare themselves in order to fulfill the ability of students to be ready for their learning, life,
and work. Importantly, the significant characteristics that English teachers should have in the
21st century are building collaboration with students, having problem-solving skills, and
learning new technologies.

The first characteristic that English teachers should have in the 21st century is building
collaboration with students. Teachers and students have to cooperate in the classroom in
order to make teachers know the needs of students. As English teachers, collaboration also
helps teachers to design the learning environment appropriately for them. The journal article
of Laal and Kermanshahi (2012) also showed that collaboration is the important thing to help
teachers understand students more, and it can help teachers to motivate student’s learning. To
illustrate, understanding the student’s needs can make teachers prepare lesson plans that are
suitable for students, and teachers can teach students effectively. When teachers teach from
what student needs, it can make them ready for their beautiful future. It is an important
characteristic that English should have to make students succeed in their life.

The second characteristic that English teachers should have in the 21st century is
having the problem-solving skill. The 21st century is the new era for teachers to make
students learning productively. English teachers should have problem-solving skills to
prepare students to learn better in the future. In addition, the journal article of Faulkner and
Latham (2016) also suggested that the problem-solving skill is a thing that helps teachers
construct the knowledge of students in order to prepare them to solve the problem efficiently.
English teachers who have problem-solving skills can manage students to learn and think
critically, and teachers can adopt learning methods that are appropriate for students in the
classroom. When teachers use problem-solving skills to students, students can apply this skill
for their future life whether learning or working life. Problem-solving skill is one skill that all
teachers should have in this period.

The important characteristic that English teachers should have in the 21st century is
learning new technologies. Nowadays, the world fulfills the new technologies that are
important for everyone. To succeed in the 21st century era of students, English teachers
should learn more technologies in order to motivate students to learn productively. English
teachers should be the technological leader in order to make the environmental classroom
effective. According to the journal article of Jan (2017), she also suggested that teachers
should combine technologies in their teaching to design the learning effectively, and it is
helpful for students to learn in a globalized time. To make teaching successful, English
teachers should teach students to use technologies creatively. Learning new technologies is
not only successful in teachers, but it is also successful in students. It is a significant thing for
teachers nowadays.

In conclusion, the role of English teachers in the 21st century should prepare the
student for success in their life, work, and learning. English teachers should build the
cooperation with each other between students and teachers to know what is student needs,
and teachers should have the problem-solving skill to make effective learning in the
classroom. It also is a good role for the teacher in the 21st century. In addition, learning new
technology also is a good characteristic for all teachers to recognize. To make Thai students
learn effectively in the 21st century era, English teachers should prepare themselves first in
order to make teachers respond to the needs of students.
