III. Read the following passage and choose the option that indicates the correct
answer .
Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in the small Tuscan town of
Vinci, near Florence. He was the son of a wealthy Florentine public official and a
peasant woman. In the mid-1460s, the family settled in Florence, where Leonardo was
given the best education that Florence could offer. He rapidly advanced socially and
intellectually. He was handsome, persuasive in conversation, and a fine musician and
improviser. About in 1466 he apprenticed as a studio boy to Andrea Del Verrocchio. In
Verrocchio’s workshop, Leonardo was introduced to many activities, from the painting
of altarpieces and panel pictures to the creation of large sculptural projects. In 1472, he
was entered in the painter’s guild of Florence, and in 1476, he was still mentioned as
Verrocchio’s assistant. In Verrocchio’s Baptism of Christ, the kneeling angel at the left
of the painting is by Leonardo.
In 1478, Leonardo became an independent master. His first commission, to paint
an altarpiece for the chapel of the Palazzo Vecchino, the Florentine town hall, was never
executed. His first large painting, The Adoration of the Magi, left unfinished, was
ordered in 1481 for the Monastery of San Donato a Scopeto, Florence. Other works
ascribed to his youth are the so-called Benois Madonna, the portrait Ginerva de’ Benci,
and the unfinished Saint Jerome.
In 1482, Leonardos career moved into high gear when he entered the service of
the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, having written the duke an astonishing letter in
which he stated that he could build portable bridges; that he knew the techniques of
constructing bombardments and of making cannons; that he could build ships as well as
armored vehicles, catapults, and other war machines; and that he could execute
sculpture in marble, bronze, and clay. He served as a principal engineer in the duke’s
numerous military enterprises and was so active also as an architect. In addition, he
assisted the Italian mathematician Luca Pacioli in the celebrated work
DivinaProportione.
Evidence indicates that Leonardo had apprentices and pupils in Milan, for whom
he probably wrote the various texts later compiled as Treatise on Painting. The most
important of his own paintings during the early Milan period was The Virgin of the
Rocks, two versions of which exist; he worked on the compositions for a long time, as
was his custom, seemingly unwilling to finish what he had begun.
From 1495 to 1496, Leonardo labored on his masterpiece, The Last Super, a
mural in the refectory of the Monastery of Santa Maria Delle Grazie, Milan.
Unfortunately, his experimental use of oil on dry plaster was technically unsound, and
by 1500 its deterioration had begun. Since 1726 attempts have been made,
unsuccessfully, to restore it; a concerted restoration and conservation program, making
use of the latest technology, was begun in 1977 and is reversing some of the damage.
Although much of the original surface is gone, the majesty of the composition and the
penetrating characterization of the figures give a fleeting vision of its vanished splendor.
During his long stay in Milan, Leonardo also produced other paintings and
drawings, most of which have been lost, theater designs, architectural drawings, and
models for the dome of Milan Cathedral. His largest commission was for a colossal
bronze monument to Francesco Sforza, father of Ludovico, in the courtyard of
CastelloSforzesco. In December 1499, however, the Sforza family was driven from
Milan by French forces; Leonardo left the statue unfinished and he returned to Florence
in 1500.

Ever since 1932, Black Friday has signaled the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in
the United States. This shopping extravaganza follows Thanksgiving, on the fourth Thursday of
November, and comes just before ‘Cyber Monday’.
Use of the name ‘Black Friday’ was first recorded as coming from Philadelphia, where it was used to
describe heavy, disruptive vehicle and pedestrian traffic the day after Thanksgiving. Apparently, loads
of people would go into town on the Friday after Turkey Day, before the yearly Army/Navy football
game on Saturday; stores would take advantage of all the extra business by promoting big sales. As
‘Black Friday’ became more popular in the early eighties, one “explanation” for the event became that
this day represented the point in the year when retailers begin to make a profit, going from being "in
the red" (meaning to be in debt) to "in the black" (meaning to be free of debt).
Black Friday is not an official holiday in the United States, but in some states government employees
are given the day off. Schools and non-retail employees are normally given Thanksgiving Thursday and
Black Friday as public holidays. Most major retailers offer promotional sales with big discounts, and it
has been the busiest shopping day every year since 2005. In 2014, sales revenues for Black Friday
reached a whopping $11.6 billion, falling slightly to $10.4 in 2015. In 2013, overall spending from
Thanksgiving Thursday up to Cyber Monday topped $56 billion!

Health experts suggest that (1) _____ healthy and happy, it’s important to keep our lives in
balance. Chinese philosophy, which has spanned thousands of years, uses the principles of yin and
yang to explain the importance of balance in life. Explained simply, the Yang represents the active
elements of the universe, (2) _____ the Yin represents the passive ones. This expresses the importance
of balance in (3) _____ of living. Today health experts agree that it’s important to have a balanced life.
For example, they’ve said it’s necessary to have a balance between work and rest and to have a
balanced exercise program. (4) _____, I’m sure you’d agree that in our busy world, it’s not always easy
to get and keep balance in our lives. (5) _____ business or study deadlines, many people work to
excess, leaving little time at the end of their busy day to spend with family and friends. They eat fast-
food and don’t get enough rest or recreation and then suffer badly from the effects of stress. It’s sad

thing, (7) _____ too much ambition can cause a person to become “out of balance”. Of course, it’s also
unbalanced to spend too much time on entertainment and pleasure activities, with little or no time (8)
_____ to work or education. Balance means allocating enough time for all the important aspects of life,
such as spending time with family and friends, working or studying, as well as resting and relaxing.

questions. (10 points)
In the world today, particularly in the two most industrialized areas, North America and Europe,
recycling is big news. People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new ways to be
sensitive to the environment. Recycling means finding ways to use products a second time. The motto
of the recycling movement is "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle".
The first step is to reduce garbage. In stores, a shopper has to buy products in blister packs, boxes
and expensive plastic wrappings. A hamburger from a fast food restaurant comes in lots of packaging:
usually paper, a box, and a bag. All that packaging is wasted resources. People should try to buy
things that are wrapped simply, and to reuse cups and utensils. Another way to reduce waste is to buy
high-quality products. When low quality appliances break, many customers throw them away and buy
new ones - a loss of more resources and more energy. Customers can vote with their wallets. For
example, if a customer buys a high-quality appliance that can be easily repaired, the manufacturer
receives an important message. In the same way, if a customer chooses a product with less packaging,
that customer sends an important message to the manufacturers. To reduce garbage, the throwaway
must stop.
The second step is to reuse. It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles. After
customers empty the bottles, they return them to the store. The manufacturers of the drinks collect the
bottles, wash them, and then fill them again. The energy that is necessary to make new bottles is saved.
In some parts of the world, returning bottles for money is a common practice. In those places, the
garbage dumps have relatively little glass and plastic from throwaway bottles.
The third step is being environmentally sensitive is to recycle. Spent motor oil can be cleaned and
used again. Aluminum cans are expensive to make. It takes the same amount of energy to make one
aluminum can as it does to run a color TV set for three hours. When people collect and recycle
aluminum (for new cans), they help save one of the world's precious resources.

Over the past 600 years, English has grown from a language of few speakers to become the
dominant language of international communication. English as we know it today emerged around
1350, after having incorporated many elements of French that were introduced following the Norman
invasion of 1066. Until the 1600s, English was, for the most part, spoken only in England and had not
extended even as far as Wales, Scotland, or Ireland. However, during the course of the next two
centuries, English began to spread around the globe as a result of exploration, trade (including slave
trade), colonization, and missionary work. Thus, small enclaves of English speakers became
established and grew in various parts of the world. As these communities proliferated, English
gradually became the primary language of international business, banking, and diplomacy.
Currently, about 80 percent of the information stored on computer systems worldwide is in English.
Two-thirds of the world's science writing is in English, and English is the main language of technology,

III. Read this passage carefully and then choose the best answer .
Over a period of time, many habitats change with respect to the types of plants and
animals that live there. This change is known as succession.
Succession occurs because plants and animals cause a change in the environment in which
they live. The first weeds and grasses that appear on a bare field, for example, change the
environment by shielding the soil from the direct sunlight. As these plants spread, the ground
surface becomes cooler and moisture than it was originally. Thus, the environment at the
ground surface has been changed. The new surface conditions favor the sprouting of shrubs. As
shrubs grow, they kill the grasses by preventing light from reaching them and also build up the
soil in the area. In addition, they attract animals that also enhance the soil. Pine seedlings soon
take hold and as they grow, they in turn shade out the shrubs. They are not able to shade out
oak and hickory seedlings, however, they have found the forest floor suitable. These seedlings
grow into large trees that eventually shade out the pines.

A survey has shown that the number of people in the United Kingdom who do not intend to
get internet access has risen. These people, who are known as “net refuseniks”, make up 44%
of UK households, or 11.2 million people in total. The research also showed that more than 70
percent of these people said that they were not interested in getting connected to the internet.
This number has risen from just over 50% in 2005, with most giving lack of computer skills as
a reason for not getting internet access, though some also said it was because of the cost. More
and more people are getting broadband and high speed net is available almost everywhere in
the UK, but there are still a significant number of people who refuse to take the first step. The
cost of getting online is going down and internet speeds are increasing, so many see the main
challenge to be explaining the relevance of the internet to this group. This would encourage
them to get connected before they are left too far behind. The gap between those who have
access to and use the internet is the digital divide, and if the gap continues to widen, those
without access will get left behind and miss out on many opportunities, especially in their
careers.
