Chapter 6 : Hydrogen

Today’s Lesson : Position of hydrogen in the Periodic Table and

occurrence of hydrogen and its resemblance
with halogens

Day 1

Hydrogen is placed both in Group 1 as well as in Group 17 in the

Periodic Table. The position of hydrogen in the Periodic Table is
controversial due to the following reasons.

i) It resembles Alkali metals since it has one electron in its valence

shell. Hence, placed in Group 1 in the Periodic Table.

ii) Hydrogen also resembles Halogens i.e. Group 17 since halogens

have seven electrons in its outermost shell and they have a tendency
to accept one electron to complete their shell.

# Resemblance with Alkali metals :

i) Both hydrogen and Alkali metals have one electron in their

outermost shell.
ii) Both of them form electropositive ions as they have a tendency to
lose one electron.
iii) Hydrogen and Alkali metals are monovalent.
iv) Both of them has strong affinity for non – metals forming respective
compounds.
v) Hydrogen and Alkali metals are very good reducing agents.
vi) Like Alkali metals hydrogen is liberated at the cathode during
electrolysis.

# Occurrence of Hydrogen :- Hydrogen is the major constituent of

the universe. In atmosphere it is found 0.9 % by mass. It can be found
under the following circumstances :
i) Hydrogen comes out from volcanoes, coal mines and oil wells.
ii) In combined state it is present in plant and animal tissues.

Session : 2021 – 2022

iii) It is present in carbohydrates, proteins and fats which are essential

for living species.

# Resemblance with Halogens :

i) Both hydrogen and halogens require one electron to complete their

outermost shell.
ii) Both of them form electronegative ions as they have a tendency to
accept one electron.
iii) Hydrogen and halogens are diatomic gas.
iv) Both of them are non-metallic in nature.
v) Hydrogen and halogens combine with non-metals to form covalent
compounds.
vi) Like halogens, hydrogen in certain compounds is liberated at the
anode during electrolysis.
