Introduction to solids Mechanics (KCE 402)

1. A beam weighing 450N is held in a horizontal position by three vertical wires, one at each end and one to middle
of length. Outer wires are of brass having diameter 1.25mm, central wire is of steel of diameter 0.625mm. If the
beam is rigid and wires are of same length and un stretched before beam is attached. estimate the stresses
induced Eb= 864GN/m2 and Es= 210GN/m2
2. For a given material, Young's modulus is 1 X 105MPa and modulus of rigidity is 0.4 X 105MPa. Find bulk modulus,
lateral contractions of a round bar of 50mm diameter and 2.5m long, when stretched 2.5mm. Take Poisson's Ratio
= 0.3
3. A steel bar is 900mm long, its two ends are 40mm and 30mm in diameter and the length of each rod is 200mm.
The middle portion of the bar is 15mm in diameter and 500 mm long. If the bar is subjected to an axial tensile load
of 15KN, find its total extension
4. The principal stresses at a point in the section of a member are 100N/mm 2 and 50N/mm2 both tensile. Find the
normal, tangential and resultant stresses across a plane passing through that point inclined at 60 degree to the
plane having 100N/mm2stress
5. A point in a strained material is subjected to a tensile stress of 80N/mm 2 and compressive stress of 100N/mm2,
acting on two mutually perpendicular planes and a shear stress of 100N/mm2are acting on these planes. Find the
principal stress, principal planes and maximum shear stress and its planes.
6. Draw Mohr's circle for pure shear, pure biaxial tension, pure uniaxial compression, and pure uniaxial tension.
7. An unknown weight falls through 10mm on a collar rigidly attached to the lower vertical bar 3m long and 600sqmm
in section. If the extension is 2mm, what is the corresponding stress and value of unknown weight? E =200N/m2
8. If the steel members, at a point the major principal stress is 180MN/sqm and minor principal stress is compressive.
If the tensile yield point of steel is 225MN/sqm. find the value of minor principal stress at which yielding will
commence according to each of the following criteria of failures:
(i) Maximum shearing stress
(ii) Maximum total strain energy
(iii) Maximum shear strain energy Poisson's Ratio = 0.3, E =200N/m2

2. An overhanging beam ABC of length 7 m is simply supported at A and B over a span of 5 m and portion
BC overhangs by 2 m. Draw the shearing force and bending moment diagrams and determine the point of
contra-flexure if it is subjected to uniformly distributed loads of 3 KN/m over the portion AB and a
concentrated load of 8 kN at C.
3. A beam of span 10m is simply supported at two points 6m apart with equal over-hang on either side. Both
the overhanging portions are loaded with a uniformly distributed load of 2 kN/m and the beam also carries
a concentrated load of 10 N at the mid span. Construct the SF and BM diagrams and locate the points of
