PART B

11. At a point P, the rectangular stress components are σx = 1, σy = -2, σz = 4, τxy = 2, τyz
CO1 3 (14)

OR
12. With respect to the frame of reference Oxyz, the following state of stress exists.
Determine the principal stresses and their associated directions. Also, check on the CO1 3 (14)
invariances

13. Consider the displacement field
u = [Y²i + 3yzj + (4 + 6x²)k]10-2
CO2 3 (14)
What are the rectangular strain components at the point P(1, 0, 2)? Use only linear
terms.
OR
14. The state of plane stress at a point is given by σxx = 40 MPa,σyy = 20MPa and τxy = 16
M Pa. Determine the i) principal stresses and principal planes and ii) maximum shear CO2 3 (14)
stress
15. Calculate the modulus of rigidity and bulk modulus of a cylindrical bar of diameter
30mm and of length 1.5m if the longitudinal strain in a bar during a tensile stress is four
times the lateral strain. Find the change in volume, when the bar is subjected to a
CO3 3 (14)
hydrostatic pressure of 100 N/mm2. Assume as E =1x105 N/mm2

16. Two vertical rods one of steel and the other of copper are each rigidly fixed at the top
and 50 cm apart. Diameters and lengths of each rod are 2 cm and 4 m respec- tively. A
cross bar fixed to the rods at the lower ends carries a load of 5000 N such that the cross
CO3 3 (14)
bar remains horizontal even after loading. Find the stress in each rod and the position of
the load on the bar. Take E for steel = 2 x 105 N/mmZ and E for copper = 1 x 105
N/mm2.

cantilever.

18. A cantilever of length 2 m carries a uniformly distributed load of 1.5 kN/m run over the
whole length and a point load of 2 kN at a distance of 0.5 m from the free end. Draw the CO4 3 (14)
S.F. and B.M. diagrams for the cantilever.
