1 Define bending stress and explain the effect of bending in a beam? CO1 K2

Write the expression used for determining bending stress using K-Method and

A rectangular cross section is subjected to a skew load. Mark the neutral axis and
8 sketch the bending stress distribution diagram. CO1 K2

Answer the following

9 i) Write the Formula of centroid and moment of inertia for I section CO1 K1

ii) Mention Bending Moment formula for I section beam

10 Derive an expression for bending stress using K-method and explain how will you modify

(a) the result with respect to neutral axis

Find the bending stress distribution in a thin walled Z section, whose thickness is t,
height h, flange width h/2 and subjected to a positive bending moment Mx.

 The Figure shows the section of an angle purlin. A bending moment of 3000 N-m is applied
to the purlin in a plane at an angle of 30˚ to the vertical y axis. If the sense of the bending
moment is such that its components Mx and My both produce tension in the positive x-y
quadrant, calculate the maximum direct stress in the purlin stating clearly the point at
which it acts.
