PART A- (10 x 2 = 20 marks)

I. Write the general equations of elasticity in polar coordinates.

12. (a) A 2.5 mm thick plate of steel with a-J = 280 MPa and Poisson's
ratio = 0.29 is formed into the cross section as shown in figure 1. Locatf>
the shear centre.

13. (a) A punch press, used for stamping sheet metal, has a punching capacity of
50 kN. The section of the frame is as shown in Fig. 3. Find the resultant.

(b) A rectangular steel plato of size 1.5 m x 1 m in a press tool il'\ subjected to
a unifot·m transverse pressure of 300 kNfm2. The plate is fixed to the
base on ali its sides. Assume E = 200 GPa, a:~ = 280 MPa and Poisson's
ratio = 0.29. Determine the plate thickness at which yielding will begin
and the max deflection at this condition.
