Subject- CE 201: Mechanics of Solids

Time: - One day Full Marks- 35

Note: (i) Attempt all the questions.

(i) Assume suitable data if required.

1. a) Write the stress tensor for a three dimensional block element and show the stresses
in the block element with proper notation.
b) Write the strain and stress matrix for 2-D plane strain and plane stress problem.
c) Prove that in case of pure shear there is no change of volume occurs after loading.
d) Discuss: Strain Rosette
e) Discuss stress strain behavior of a low ductile material.
5 x 1 =5
2. a) A steel circular rod tappers from 20 mm diameter to 40 mm in a central axis length of 1
m. Find how much of this length will increase under a pull of 60 kN. Take E= 210 GPa
(2)

b) At a point on the surface of a cylinder, the material is subjected to stresses

 x  84MPa ,  y  30MPa and  xy  32 MPa . Determine principal stress and principal
plane. Also draw Mohr’s circle to show the principal stresses and principal plane. (3)

4. (5)

5. (5)
6. (5)

7. The square block is in plane strain and is subjected to the following strains as shown in the
Fig below.
 x  2 xy
 y  3 xy 2
 xy  x 2  y 3
Compute the displacement field (i.e., displacement components u(x, y) and v(x, y)) within
the block
