Submission date: 01.04.2024 (Monday– before 5 PM)

1. Find the reactions for the partially loaded beam with a uniformly varying load shown in
Fig.1.

Figure 1

2. Determine the reactions at A and B for the beam shown in Fig.2.

3. A cantilever beam 5 m long is loaded as shown in Fig.3 Draw the shear force and bending
moments diagrams for the cantilever beam.

4. Draw the S.F and B.M diagrams of a simply supported beam of length 7m carrying udl as
shown in Fig.4

5.A simply supported beam of length 10m carries the uniformly distributed load and two points
load as shown in Fig. 5. Draw the S.F and B.M diagrams of a simply supported beam. Also
calculate the maximum bending moment.

6. A horizontal beam 10m long is carrying a uniformly distributed load of 1kN/m. The beam is
supported on two supports 6 m apart. Find the position of the supports so that the bending
moments on the beam as small as possible. Also draw S.F and B.M diagrams.

7. Draw the S.F and B.M diagrams of a simply supported beam of length 4m carrying inclined
load as shown in Fig.7

8. A beam of 10 m long and simply supported at each end has a uniformly distributed load of
1000N/m extending from left end upto the middle of the beam. There is also an anti-clockwise
couple of 15kNm at a distance of 2.5 m from the right end. Draw the S.F and B.M diagrams.
9. A square beam of 20 X 20 mm in section and 2m long is supported at the ends. The beam
fails when a point load of 400N is applied at the center of the beam. What uniformly distributed
load per meter length will break a cantilever beam of the same material 40 mm wide, 60 mm
deep and 3 m long?

10. A timber beam of rectangular section of length 8m is simply supported. The beam carries a
udl of 12kN/m run over the entire length and a point load of 10 kN at 3 m from the left support.
If the depth is two times the width and the stress in the timber is not to exceed 8N/mm2, find
the suitable dimensions of the beam.

11. An I section shown in fig.8 is simply supported over a span of 12m. If the maximum
permissible bending stress is 80 N/mm2, what concentrated load can be carried at a distance of
4 m from right support?

12. A cast iron beam of T section as shown in Fig.9. The beam is simply supported on a span
of 8 m. The beam carries a UDL of 1.5 kN/m length on the entire span. Find the maximum
tensile stress and compressive stresses.

13. A simply supported wooden beam of span 1.3 m having a cross section 150 mm wide by
250 mm deep carries a point load W at the centre. The permissible stresses are 7 N/mm 2 in
bending and 1 N/mm2 in shearing. Calculate the safe load W.

14. The shear force acting on a section of beam is 50kN. The section of the beam is T shaped
of dimensions 100 mm X 100 mm X 20 mm as shown in fig.10. Calculate the shear stress at
the neutral axis and at the junction of the web and the flange. Draw the shear stress variation
on the T shape beam.

15. The shear force acting on a beam at an I section wit unequal flanges is 50kN. The section
is shown in Fig.11. The moment of inertial of the section about the N.A is 2.849 x 104. Calculate
the shear stress at the N.A and also draw the shear stress distribution over the depth of the
section.
