As shown in the schematic diagram, a vertical cylindrical hollow glass

container with a height of 15.0 cm has a thick bottom glass, the

distance from point A at the bottom to point B in the center of the
bottom plane of the container is 8.0 cm, and the upper edge of the
bottom is a protrusion The spherical crown, the center point C is just
below the point A, and the radius of the sphere is 1.75 cm. The
refractive indices of air and container glass are known to be n0 = 1.0
and n1 = 1.56 , respectively. Only paraxial ray imaging is considered.

(1) When there is no liquid in the container, find the position of

the image formed on the symmetry axis of the glass cylinder by
the light emitted from point B passing through the plano-convex
glass cylinder, and judge the virtuality of the image.

(2) When the container is filled with a liquid with a refractive

index of 1.30, find the position of the imaged point after the
light emitted from point B is refracted through the upper
surface of the plano-convex glass cylinder, and judge whether the
image is virtual or real.
Answer Key(s):
(1) The light from point B passes through the plano-convex glass
column, and the image point formed on the axis of symmetry of the
glass column is 9.75 cm directly above point C or 16.0 cm above point B.

(2) The light from point B passes through the plano-convex glass
column, and the image point formed after the first refraction is 26.25
cm directly below point C or 20.0 cm below point B.
