Activity

a bill became law?
Analysis
1. As a law-abiding citizen, what can you do to uphold the rule of law?

As a free citizen of the Philippines, in order to uphold the rule of law we should
always follow even the simplest rule or law in the society. We should practice
discipline within ourselves, so that when we join the bigger picture of the society
such as engaging in politics, we will be able to follow certain laws in the
government. We should remember that the state should not be governed by the
arbitrary decisions of leaders or government officials but it should be governed
by laws.

2. Why is the rule of law important in a democratic society?

Rule of law is very important in a democratic society because without the rule
of law, the government or the people in power will use their power against the
oppressed members of the society, they will not follow the laws inclined with
the international human rights policies and even the constitutional laws, and will
only follow what they think is beneficial in a partial perspective. Rule of law
ensure that social and political power order are maintained in the country, and
it enable the state to achieve its power because each political entity or
department in the government has limitations.

Quiz: Answer the following question below:
1. What is the importance of having dissenting opinions in democratic
legislation processes?

Having dissenting opinions actually plays a big role when making a bill into
a law because due to dissenting opinions. Dissenting opinions broadened
the scope of democratic processes. Furthermore, the legislative committees
will be able to determine what areas are lacking and are should be added
to the bill. Due to these opinions thorough evaluation is exercised to make
sure that the bill will be a great help in the citizens of the country. This is the
reason why before becoming a law, a bill must go through three readings,
revisions, and amendments to make sure that nothing will go wrong when
the bill will turn into a law if approved by the President.

2. Who sponsored the Rizal Bill in Congress? What are their arguments
in support of the bill?

Rizal Bill was supported by Senator Laurel, whose argument in supporting

the bill is that it is important to disseminate the ideas and ideals of Jose Rizal
through the reading of his works, notably his novels Noli Me Tangere and
El Filibusterismo. In addition to his argument is that it is significant that the
reading of the original and unexpurgated edition of Rizal's novel must be
done because the real purpose of studying these will be defeated if not
followed. Moreover, Senator Claro M. Recto also supported the bill claiming
that the bill only aims to contextualize Rizal’s heroism in the face of Spanish
tyranny and it does not have intention of discrediting the church.
Furthermore, Congressman Jacobo Z. Gonzales in the House of
Representatives also supported the bill having similar ideals with the two
Senators. Veteranos dela Revolucion, Alagad ni Rizal, The Freemason, The
Knights of Rizal were the congregations who supported the bill as well.

Reflection on the Film
(Guide Questions)
1. Describe the nineteenth-century Philippines as represented in the
Philippines?

The nineteenth-century Philippines showed in the film depicted the

feudalistic master-slave relationship by the Spaniards since we are still
under the power of Spain during that time. With regards to the citizen, high
class people are Spaniards, peninsulares, and friars. Meanwhile, It also
featured various faces of Filipinos at that time who are warriors, travelers,
bandits, artists, masters, slaves, prisoners, and poor people whom people
in higher class called, indios. Revolutions are also present in the film, the
main character, Kulas, joined a revolution to fight for independence by the
end of the Film, where he found what does it truly mean to be a Filipino. In
conclusion, the 19th century Philippines was where revolutions for
independence were at its peak, propaganda movements were highly active
during these times.

2. What is the main question that the film seeks to answer? What is your
reflection based on the film and your understanding?

Based on my own understanding of the film, it seeks to answer the question,

what is a true identity of a Filipino or how can we say that I am a Filipino.
Upon watching the Film, I came to a realization that a true Filipino means
being able to look back and return to your home or origin even though it is
not as wealthy or good as the life you are experiencing in the present.
Keeping your feet to the ground and giving credits to the life that made you
who you are in the present is what a true Filipino is. We cannot see it always
in the appearance, because there are people in the film such as the
Chinese, Lim, who does not look like a Filipino but is more of a Filipino than
the Filipinos who look down to their own countrymen who have a lower class
than them. Filipinos who have a good life even calls the one below them
Indios just to state that they are not equals. As what Don Tibor stated, being
a Filipino means being willing to serve and accept responsibility- a
responsibility of being a defender of our own land and our fellowmen.

My Hero

Being a hero does not necessarily mean you need to go into a bloody war and
fight with swords and guns. It does not necessarily mean you that you have to conquer
lands and oceans to be called a hero. You can be a hero without knowing you have
become the hero in someone’s story. Our small actions towards other people may be
big to them or may result into something bigger in someone’s life. We never know. As
for me, I have someone whom I consider a hero. His name isn’t found in textbooks.
He didn’t do something marvellous that was written down in history, but he changed
my life completely. He is my son, Akki.

Life was hard. Its hard to deal with its everyday trials. Life back them was like
a dark tunnel, no light, hard to breathe, and enclosed. The feeling of isolation was very
present. I was in a place where I thought I can find my dreams, but there was only
loneliness. I thought it will be the best years of my life in the school of my dreams,
living in a dormitory, far from my parents’ grasp, however, life unexpectedly became
unexciting for me like how Rizal was when he was exiled in Dapitan. It turns out that
life without my family is very lonely. When I found out about my pregnancy while I was
still far away from my family, that’s when tomorrow became something to look forward
for. I told myself something bizarre was coming and its growing inside me so I should
do better for myself and my baby. My dull life in a far away land became an exciting
challenge every day, I am not alone anymore, I have something inside me who would
listen to my laughs, cries, and stories.

He may never know it but the moment I found out about him, he held my hand
and lifted me from drowning. I know that he is the one who will always be my true love.
My hero, my son, my Akki.
