I had thought Librarianship only involved the arrangement of books on a shelf before desperation for

undergraduate admissions drew my attention to the discipline in 2015. I am really glad my attention was
drawn because now, I can’t think of my other profession. I have come to realize that libraries are essential
and indispensable even with tremendous growth in technology. I also learnt that the discipline of Library
Science trains individuals to be effective information managers, information officers, knowledge
management specialists etc. to mention but a few.

I have come to learn that library and information science professionals have the unique responsibility of
not only protecting the library’s resources but also guiding people towards the knowledge they are
seeking. Librarians know how knowledge is created in today’s information environment and what, when
and how it should be delivered to appropriate users. The way knowledge is created, disseminated, and
acted upon continues to go through rapid changes and evolution. In fact, the digital environment has
changed the functions and duties of LIS professionals, they are increasingly responsible not only to
provide traditional library and information services but also to deliver online information services
according to actual needs of users. LIS professionals are information resource specialists that provide
solutions rather than volumes of literature. LIS Professionals are involved in a series of activities and
operations starting from developing an understanding of users’ needs to selecting appropriate information
sources for retrieval of desired information. Therefore, LIS professionals act as intermediary because they
function between the end user and an Information Retrieval system to assist in information retrieval.

As a discipline, I am intrigued by the different professional careers that I can diversify into after I
complete the Master’s Degree. I want to be a part of a system that not only supplies the information, but
joins the ongoing dialogue of access and information freedom. I want to be part of the enormous shift that
has already begun from printed word to electronic media, exploring ways to further expand accessibility
to information through technology. Through all this, I hope to also maintain sight of the integrity and
value of the physical word, and a physical place to seek and absorb information. I want to be one of the
Librarians that bridge the gap between people, information and technology by creating advisory resources
to encourage users to develop a lifelong love for reading and learning as well as satisfying their
information needs.

The Information and Library Studies at Aberystwyth University is especially appealing to me due to its
academic prestige and also its variety of courses offered that will ensure I have a well-rounded knowledge
in all aspects of librarianship. I am especially appealed that the MA degree is accredited by the UK’s
Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and it will equip me to fulfill the
essential role that companies and professional bodies need to compete effectively in a fast-moving
national and international business environment. It promises an enriching and collaborative learning
environment that will introduce me to new information technologies and innovative ideas that will
provide the opportunity to create lifelong partnerships within the academic and information realms.
Myself as an approachable, effective librarian. The communal proponent of Information and Library
Studies at Aberystwyth University program will push me to better understand the people who need to
access information systems as well as the communities that they come from. By working diverse
disciplines, I will learn skills essential to helping researchers in many fields. I want to be known for my
ability to guide others through all types of media in their search for information.

Completing the Information and Library Studies at Aberystwyth University will give me the opportunity
to enter into the world of librarianship with the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities to excel in the
field.

As a graduate of the master’s program, I believe that I will contribute a new thought process to the library
and information science profession. Once I have established myself as an effective librarian, I will seek
leadership opportunities so I can pass on to others what I have learned. I will strive to excel to the point
that I have the opportunity to supervise a team of library professionals that will work together to
positively impact the community. I believe in linking the community and the schools with the library as a
contribution to the profession. This link will help in education people of all ages showing them that the
internet is not the only source for information. My professional expectations are to help people educate
themselves and to connect with others all over the world exchanging ideas that can benefit libraries.

Finally, while I currently plan on applying the skills and lessons I will learn in the MA programme to an
academic or professional library setting, I feel that Information and Library Studies at Aberystwyth
University programme will as well open my eyes to the many different opportunities available in
Librarianship. Regardless of where my place of employment ends up being, my major goal is to make a
difference in the lives of others and communities through literacy and access to information and ICT. I
certainly believe that the Information and Library Studies program at Aberystwyth University program is
the perfect environment where I can cultivate a deeper knowledge and understanding of the complexity of
information access and library services. Aberystwyth University’s program is unique because it will help
me covet my love for Library Science as a discipline into a career that will make a difference and develop
me to be a Resource Person in diverse areas of academics.
